Framework supporting far-right racists?

Not through Omarchy. DHH amassed wealth, power and connections through other means. Omarchy changes nothing.

Can we agree that he can’t exercise any harm through that computer code (as long as he doesn’t sneak in there any alt-right manifesto or malware)?

Interesting, we talked about not agreeing on everything, and now that’s potentially criminal. No further questions, thanks

We can fight for people’s rights by diminishing the amount of time that the haters have for hateful things, which is exactly what Framework accomplished for DHH.

DHH is not going to come and bite you through your screen interfacing with Omarchy’s computer code. That was my point.

If EU person1 says person2 is Nazi, person2 can take to court person1. And depending on the harm being done (for example inciting violence) the court may very well decide that this is a crime.

You may be discussing, but others have accused me of being far-right Nazi nut job, because I do not agree with them.

I have not participated in gay parades, nor protest against minorities. This is what the Center feels like.

My impression is that you are deciding to look at Omarchy as a piece of code and to claim that DHH is harmless because Omarchy is just a piece of code, even though you agree that DHH has plenty of power to do harm. (This feels like a circular loop of “my point proves my point“)

I don’t think you are interested in the conversation we are having other than deflecting the point that there is real possibility for DHH to harming the community (You don’t agree this harm is related with Omarchy’s code. We can of course agree that Omarchy’s code is not harmful. It’s everything else apart from the code that can be used for harm, and you are refusing to look at this, so I guess we both made our points)

Edit. This was meant to be a reply to parawizard’s reply to me. including quote because I did it wrong somehow.

So the thing is they cannot support every distro or tiling manager or small project that people are using. It’s an impossibility because resources are finite. So they make decisions on what they support (financially or non-financially) and booster and feature and what they say works on their devices.
So a decision gets made. At some point they thought sending DHH a laptop was a good idea, and made the decision to do so. Why? Well why does any business do this? Sure to help further support of the products their customers use their machine for could be a reason as you suggest. I would suggest getting some engagement and boosterism from a person with eyes on them was also a reason. If so, then the decision was made to tie themselves in with that person and the rest of their platform.

I’m suggesting that having criteria set to decide which projects to support and boost and further engage with is necessary for companies. Not doing so may be fine for a rinky dink operation. But Framework doesn’t want to be small. They want to be big and make a difference. An IPO is not out of the question as has been said by them in the past. The decision not to associate with a person and project that does not meet the criteria of their own organization would not generate any blow back. Who knows what projects they have not gotten mixed up with.
So no. I’m not advocating for purity tests based on my politics or another person’s politics. I’m advocating for them to act like a company that wants to thrive. And part of that is to keep with their mission that they’ve set out - one that attracted many like me to purchase their products when they’re not the best or cheapest.
There are many here commenting and many more not commenting that they feel this mission has been betrayed. They’ll need to find a way to go forward. Ignoring this response is one option. It will piss off a lot of people. They may piss off a lot by making a correction.
I’m interested to see what happens.

I thought my point was pretty clear: DHH’s potential for harm is unchanged regardless of whether Omarchy is involved or not. I think I’ve argued for this pretty conclusively. At no point did I suggest that DHH was benign or totally harmless.

I don’t think that’s how it works

Like… I got a touchscreen tablet for free from a nonprofit organization, which has allowed me to work on touchscreen support in GNOME Calendar, but despite that, I’m here stating my opinions, same on social media, which is essentially the equivalent of having the time to do hateful things.

Oh absolutely; no disagreement there. I think we are looking past our points - I’m looking at it from a sociopolitical perspective, not from a technopolitical perspective: his words from his mouth and blog posts bite (as evident from several posts shared in this entire thread), not his code.

By having to work on touchscreen support you have less time for hate, not zero time. The difference between the two is quiet clear. In the example you gave, you have less time to state your opinions since you have to work on touchscreen support.

His blog post on London is the standard migrant hate and pro-nationalistic sentiment which is what half of Europe and America believe in now (or even more) unfortunately, but that doesn’t interact with my point that he can’t propagate those beliefs through his work on Omarchy which remains strictly a fine project for Linux beginners which is why many people are excited about it.

Here’s the thing, I don’t have to work on touchscreen support. You can look at the merge request that I haven’t worked on it for two months.

I mean, if that was truly the case, we wouldn’t be here, wouldn’t we?

Doesn’t matter as at least there was an attempt, although it wasn’t successful at lowering the amount of time that you spend on posting your opinions.

How does that interact with the point that I made?

That’s not the point. Don’t do unto others what you would not have them do unto you. Just as you don’t want to be labeled a Nazi for having a different opinion, others may not want to be labeled anti-government for the same reason.
And since you brought it up, I’ll just mention that I’ve never been to a gay pride parade, and my visits to demonstrations are also limited. I chose my avatar some time ago because the hatred that has been raining down on the LGBTQ community and other minorities lately really gets on my nerves. No more, no less. Otherwise, I am what you might call a normal, law-abiding citizen. And as I wrote in my first post in this thread, yes, statements like those made by DHH cause me great concern. I’m out of this dialogue now.

People are clearly (and rightfully so) upset by the decision, because of DHH’s dangerous views. Even if he hasn’t done anything bizarre with his project, it doesn’t change in any way that we prefer to not promote and fund projects that come from those kinds of people

I’m really sorry, but I simply cannot believe that there is a universe where Framework decided to fund Omarchy with the intention that DHH has less time to advocate for discrimination. Like I said, that’s not how it works, and I’m the prime example of that. Even if I pretend that I am convinced that they did it for that reason, it’s certainly extremely irresponsible at best.

It’s kind of telling that he went to ‘X’ to make that, instead of to his own forums Did he release it anywhere else?

It’s a real interesting choice to say you support LGBT people, but do it in the ~hug~ hatebox whose owner bought the platform to astroturf online for Trump.

And we should not call normal people automatically “far-right” if they like Omarchy and even if they recommend this to others.

Fine. I will leave it here. I do not think that Omarchy itself is inherently evil. It is “Omarchy, made by DHH”, not “Omarchy is DHH”. Its open source and free, transparent piece of code. Everybody can take it and modify it. Thats all. It (the code) does not hurt anybody. If in the future, it is turned to proprietary, is monetized and starts to i.e. display far-right messages in its GUI, I will change my mind. But even then, the original idea can be forked and continued before that.

Those kinds of people make up half or more of Europe and the Americas (unfortunately). How do you even go about applying this to real life where for each given person that you’re interacting with there’s a 1/2 chance that they’re one of those people?

I should’ve precised “less than or equal to”, since then even if the time doesn’t change at least there was an attempt at reducing the time he has for hateful tasks (like in your example).

How?

If he posted it in the forums it would have less visibility and be quickly buried in this thread: there are 1198 posts so far. X is a hate platform by Nazi fascist Musk but so is Bluesky (see the recent controversy with their CEO), but at least in terms of visibility putting a statement on X would’ve been vastly superior.

He could, you know, start a new thread. Since he’s CEO, I’m figuring they wouldn’t delete it.

Why start a new thread when there’s already an existing one for this issue?

Protests, writing FOSS within the public interest, interacting almost exclusively with people in protected communities, etc. (both online and in the real world, including writing code)

This entire thread is proof of that
