Does anyone try FreeBSD on Framework Laptop 12?
FreeBSD 14.3 was the first thing I tried when I got mine, and everything including the Wi-Fi worked fine. I’ve been meaning to reinstall (dual-booting now for gaming sake) with 15.0 which just came out.
The proprietary Wi-Fi firmware blobs were removed from the FreeBSD OS distribution between 14.2 and 14.3, so you will need to run fwget and download them. It will work just fine after that however: fwget(8)
I have the Framework wired Ethernet module but didn’t have a wired network handy at the time to go along with it, so I enabled USB Tethering on my phone, plugged it into the laptop, and ran dhclient ue0 to get the network up for fwget (that’s DHCP client, first USB Ethernet device).
I also gave Wayland a spin for the first time ever when I was on 14.3, but I didn’t love any of the Wayland compositors. KDE was the “least bad”, but I still think I might go back to my good ol’ comfy WMaker X11 setup for 15.0. Dunno yet.
Curious if you got the touchscreen to work on FreeBSD?
I didn’t have a pen yet at the time and didn’t think to try it with a finger before partitioning and blowing the 14.3 install away.
Let me know if you ever give 15 a shot. I love the idea of this laptop + FreeBSD
