Full-width palmrest - 3d printed files released

I had wanted to get the Left version printed from JLC with both SLA (JLC black resin with surface smoothing), and SLS (3201PA-F Nylon). But during their review process they said they can’t guarantee that there won’t be a stripe line, because of the large part size.

Can someone recommend me another service which can print the palmrest using a process and material combination which results in black smooth surface without lines (or minuscule), closest to the stock palmrest feel?

Budget is around 50. Location EU.

Have you tried fdm? The design is such that the top surface goes on the build-plate, which with a smooth build-plate should result in a smooth surface (much smoother than any powder based process could produce without post processing).

Not a fan of the print lines of FDM at all.

The sample pictures I saw of SLA black didn’t have any such lines, which is why I wanted to print with that.

You aren’t going to see the lines as they are inside the laptop and it’s hard to get anything as smooth as the bottom layer of an fdm print with other 3d printing methods.

Sla also has layer lines they are just a lot higher resolution. This model is probably too big pro print in sla with anything resembling usable dimensional accuracy. You also aren’t supposed to print such large areas flat in sla as that can damage the machine (if they even have one that large).

The bottom layer of an fdm print literally has the negative surface of the build-plate (to the microscopic level), so if that one is smooth it’ll be smooth, if it rough it^ll be rough and if it has diffraction gratings it’ll have the negative of those on the print.

I see. Thank you for the information.

I was under the impression that FDM lines will still be visible because of the resolution and print type. Like this image from reddit:

Visible kinda (depends on color and lighting ad print settings and stuff) but you won’t be able to feel them if done right. If it’s about looks and not feel it may not be possible to get a perfect result without post processing.

Here are some photos of the palm rest FDM PETG print I got from this person.

You can see the lines if you look closely, but I wouldn’t say they are unpleasant. And in the pictures they have in the linked topic, lines are not visible, so it may be that choosing a different textured plate would also hide the lines.

Don’t you also feel that texture when your palm is resting on it?

This looks like it is slightly underextruded/too high but still looks pretty good.

Not at all, I made the photos under sunlight so that the contrast is pretty high. In fact in dimmer lighting I can’t see the lines.

And the surface is completely flat, no rough texture, in fact it has a very pleasant matte texture

If print lines really bother someone, I’ll note from the prop-making community that they can be eliminated. If you spray on alternating layers of spray paint filler primer and clear coat then sand it down, you can entirely eliminate the print lines

whoa, it looks so good!

Wanted to say thanks for linking this! I ordered from him and it just arrived yesterday. Translucent blue PETG. I think it came out pretty good, and the texture is fine.

Did you get a reply from @takaides ?
One of my friends has a 3D printer but bed is very small :frowning:

New FW16 owner and I just want to say that I will be first in line when Framework starts selling these officially.

Is there a reason why STEP files are not yet released for these parts? We have a Github issue requesting this coming up on 4 months without acknowledgement…

I bet that would look real nice sanded down to ~2k grit. It looks nice even without it.
