FW 12, Initial Thoughts

I don’t have a lot else to compare it to right now, unfortunately. It may run a bit warmer than some other devices, but it hasn’t been an issue for me so far. We’ll see how it goes after some additional use.

Is there something specific about the bottom of the device getting warm that causes a problem for you?

The original, from 2009? It’s on sale for $5 right now. Hmm…

I haven’t used it much yet. The little I have, it seems fine. But I will eventually be able to borrow a Microsoft Slim Pen 2, to give that a go. I plan to install a couple drawing programs and such and give it a better go.

Edit: When I say “seems fine,” I mean, it seems to work as well as any other touch screen I use on a daily basis, which is good, because phones and tablets are pretty well sorted at this point. And this one feels equally smooth and responsive so far.

I’m assuming the second version won’t work on max, if only because the settings are higher. :joy_cat:

Installing now, lol.

I think I’m a little sensitive to it but my biggest use case is on my lap, rather than on a desk surprisingly, as a secondary device and I like to wear shorts which don’t offer much protection from a hot device, I remember trying a dell xps a few years ago one of the last before they did the redesign trackpad thing and they just got too hot, so did a Chromebook with a 12th gen i3, that’s why I’m a bit worried, still rocking a pixel book go as a result for now

Fucking perfect. :joy_cat: I can’t thank you enough! I just want to know if it’ll have the same resolution as on a Surface Book 2! Now, if only Assassin’s Creed IV would run well… Sigh… :sob:

Initial report, at native resolution (1920x1200), with in-game settings all maxed, I get 30-40FPS. It’s not very high, but it’s smooth. It doesn’t seem to stutter or drop. Having grown up with consoles that often struggled to get 30+ FPS, it felt totally playable. Granted, I only got 5 minutes into the game. But I was jumping and smashing and slicing some fools. Keep in mind, this is the i3 with just 8GB of RAM.

Edit: Oh, and balanced performance profile. Let me switch it to max performance and see if it makes a difference.

Honestly, same here; 30 fps was the best possible at the time. And this is coming from a 1998 kid who grew up for a while in India. :joy_cat:

If I bump it down to 1440x800, it still looks okay and the FPS goes up to around 45.

Good enough for me! What was the max resolution for the 12 again?

Native resolution of the display is 1920x1200.

At that resolution, Prototype runs in the low to mid 30 FPS range most of the time. Set to 1440x800, it’s more like mid 40s.

For anyone curious, Half-Life 2 runs at a steady 60FPS with everything maxed except MSAA. With that turned on, it drops to the mid to upper 40s. The iGPU does not like MSAA, lol.

Spelunky runs flawlessly, no surprise there. I have a couple other games I’ll probably try, just for the heck of it, but I’ll probably move on to other software from here. But not tonight. It’s past my bed time, lol.

When you get a chance, could you pretty please see how long the battery lasts (preferably from 100 but 80 is fine too) with multi tab internet use? And if you were using a VPN that would be awesome👀

I do plan to do some battery life testing. I’ll definitely update once I do. Hopefully later tonight, but it’s a pretty busy weekend, so we’ll see. Cheers!

Bear in mind, I’m downloading and installing programs while I’m browsing at the moment, but for the first 10 minutes or so, I was just getting logged into software accounts so I could access product keys and such, and it was getting pretty warm. There was a lot of jumping around between different sites, and some of the sites seemed pretty power hungry with all their graphics and animations and nonsense. So it was probably a pretty intensive type of “browsing,” but it did get warm. Not burning hot, but pretty warm against my bare knee, and I could feel the warmth through my thin shorts as well. I kinda stopped noticing it after a bit, but if you are sensitive to it, I’d be hesitant to say you’d be okay with it. If I get a chance to use a different machine for a while, I can let you know how it compares.

Actually, if I get a chance, I’ll grab my IR thermometer and take some readings later. See how hot the bottom actually gets.

Hope you’re taking notes for the review.

They better put that at the end of the video: “Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.” :joy_cat:

YouTube video playing, some general browsing, LibreOffice open, the temperature of the hot area on the bottom varies around 30-40C, with the peak temp spot at 41.2C. Hotter than I expected. I bet it would feel hotter to the touch if it was aluminum, as the heat transfer to your skin would be quicker, but as it is, that’s pretty warm for just light use. The fan is running, but only noticeable if I lean down to the machine. However, it did ramp up to audible during some heavier work, though it never got super loud.

I turned it on almost exactly three hours ago and got right to using it. Battery was at 80% at the start. I have had a YouTube video playing at 720P the entire time, I have been browsing the internet, I downloaded, installed, and activated a handful of programs, and did some writing in LibreOffice (one of the programs I installed). Battery is currently at 31%.
