I got my son the same kind of laptop that I have. System details below.
What is to be done if the laptop is just getting too darned hot? My son does a lot more gaming than I do, so this may be why he notices it more. But, on my laptop, I see one cpu running near 100% but 15 doing not too much and the fan is going like the sound of a firehose and, yes, it is a bit hot.
I looked at fans in the store. Are those better fans than what is shipped, additional fans, just the same fan? Which is it?
I thought I would check with you all before I cons up something with a tray and liquid nitrogen packs and such.
He is already annoyed with me for getting him a computer that runs linux, which means he cannot get Windoze viruses, I mean games. So, help me out here. :–)
thanx – ray

Is that expected? I’d run something like htop to see what process is maxing out one of my CPU cores. There was a bug a while ago where a kworker would max out a single CPU core. I don’t know if its been fixed because I’ve had my gpe10 interrupt disabled ever since: [TRACKING] AMD: small group of kworkers keeping CPU 0 busy after suspend/resume cycle(s)
As for gaming, heat is unavoidable. When I play factorio, my laptop consumes a little bit more than 30 watts, which also means 30 watts of heat is being generated. This makes the laptop quite hot. I work around it by using a laptop cooling pad when gaming. They’re basically laptop-sized boxes of plastic or metal that usually have fans inside to increase airflow but even without the fans, the extra separation between your lap and the computer helps make you more comfortable and the easier airflow going through the open mesh of the cooling pad (as opposed to choking on the fabric of your clothes) helps make your laptop more comfortable.
I don’t ever need the cooling pad when using the laptop as a regular laptop, but gaming continuously consumes a bunch more power and therefore generates a bunch more heat.
I believe they are the same fans. When I ordered a replacement fan from the framework marketplace, it seemed no different than the fan I had originally.
Thanks for thoughtful replly. I suspect that I will need to get him a cooling pad. He defintely plays factorio and the curseforge mods that he uses and develops for minecraft … well, who knows what they are doing. :–) O well.
Although they are called “lap top”, I would say they all can get too hot to put on your lap. When I put my laptop in a backpack, I put it in a soft, padded cover. I then use that soft padded cover or the whole backpack on my lap, and then place the laptop on that.
