I’m on windows 11 with the dGPU and sometimes when i launch a game, my laptop just turns off then turns back on immediately after, no windows blue screen just no power, then power. it happens when im not plugged into the wall but has no regard to battery charge level. The games are not demanding GPU wise. any thoughts?
That’s certainly odd. What games does it happen for? Currently the only thing I could think of is checking the interposer. Make sure it’s clean and has a good connection.
People playground, factorio, but a much more demanding game like helldivers has not caused any issues yet
Hmmm… It kinda sounds like when the dGPU is in use it’s ok and when the iGPU is used it’s not. Are you able to check what GPU is being used? My thought is that since it crashes immediately you could force dGPU on the games that it tends to crash on and see if that fixes it. Not sure if this would be a hardware or software issue.
i have all games set to use the 7700s
It could be a driver issue. Are you using the drivers provided by FW or by AMD? I did get an email this week that I saw this morning that FW had new drivers for the FW16.
i havent installed the new ones yet
It can be related to the bios settings (if you’re on the latest one, which has introduced those pesky bugs) as you can find more feedback here:
https://community.frame.work/t/framework-16-randomly-shuts-off/
Is the behavior like a Freeze then reboot? FTR
I.e. The system seems like it has frozen for about 20 seconds then reboot.
We have occasional reports of that on Linux here:
If you do get a FTR, then you might have the “easy to reproduce” case for it, that has alluded us up until now.
There is a way to access the S5_RESET_STATUS register in Windows though, that would make us 100% sure we have a similar issue.
On Windows this tool is the easiest way I know of to fetch random
register values.
You need to turn off some security features to use it. Once you’ve got it installed you
should be able to do an MMIO read just like Linux does. You can use the
FCH_PM_BASE from a Linux patch and then look at the
FCH_PM_S5_RESET_STATUS register from my patch.
These are both in patch 5.
Hi
Has anyone else got these games as well?
Can anyone else reproduce the “FW shutting down” problem?
If it can be reliably reproduced, FW might be able to track it down and fix it.
It’s possible that the EC doesn’t reduce the power limit enough when using battery and the battery management disconnects it due to over current.
no it snot , just black screen, then shows FW logo as if it is booting from a full shutdown
I started having the same issue when I start Elder Scrolls Online on my FW 13 yesterday. Opening the launcher works every time but sometimes when I then start the game from the launcher the laptop goes black, reboots and shows the framework logo.
Now randomly, whenever i take my computer out of sleep it reboots 3 seconds after logging in
Since your original post, a lot of time has passed.
From the various threads that have happened since then, I would suggest the following:
- BIOS update. If you don’t have the latest, it might be worth updating. The did fix a few causes of the Freeze (maybe 30 seconds), then Reboots (FTR) that your problem looks like.
Note: there are reports of the latest BIOS from FW causing other problems, so you might not wish to take this route. - Quite a few of the problems were linked to the USB PD charging, but as your problem happens while the PSU is unplugged, I don’t think that they match your problem.
- There have been reports of bad RAM causing problems like this. Unfortunately it is very difficult to prove. For example, there was one report of problem reboots. They ran all the “memtest” tests and they passed, but when they replaced the RAM chips, their problems disappeared. So, I guess a good start might be saying what RAM chips (manufacturer, model, size) you have and maybe trying some new RAM chips from a different manufacturer.
