My 12 has been fine the entire time I’ve had it but not half an hour ago it started flickering like crazy. The flickering is present in the bios. Re-seating the display cables twice did not help.
I also disconnected the battery to see if maybe that had something to do with it but no dice.
It’s really noticeable if the display is blue and not visible if the display is white.
Has anyone else encountered this issue or found a fix for it?
I did the whole support ticket and sent them a bunch of pictures. The ticket got escalated but they said their responses would be delayed due an increased volume of inquiries.
In the mean time, I’ve made some small discoveries about my flickering issue.
I’ve discovered that full screen content seems to make the display flicker.
I can open an image full screen or a video in a program like celluloid and it will start flickering. I don’t think games contribute, so far just images and videos. The big problem is that it doesn’t stop flickering when the content is closed, or after a restart. It seems to fade away over the course of about an hour or two but it will start flickering if I open the full screen content again.
To me it seems likely that it has something to do with the firmware because its present in the bios. (Updating firmware hasn’t helped either.)
On the one hand, it does sound like a software issue, but once it starts it persists through re-starts, and it is present in the BIOS. So that sounds more like hardware.
Either way, Hopefully it can get sorted out quickly.
Almost sounds like a component glitching out as it heats up.
Once it happens, it sounds like if you reboot immediately, the problem persists. Correct?
If you fully shut it down and turn it back on right away, does it also persist after that?
If that is the case, what happens if you turn the computer off and wait a bit before turning it back on? Does it still persist, or if you let it cool off, does the problem go away for a time?
I’ve been working on it with them for the last three days I think, They’re trying real hard lol.
Seems like we’ve exhausted nearly every avenue. Test with external display, Try new ram, Poke the display cable, Wave a Cheeto over it and say a chant. *Sigh* Lol
did you get any further in this? Do you have a Ticket Number or something I can reference to?
I think I got a bit closer to the issue. I noticed that it does not happen when watching youtube, but starts pretty soon when I start using Jellyfin. I have a feeling that something goes wrong when HW decoding HDR content.
For me the following happened: I reduced the maximum Color Resolution of the Screen in the settings to 8 Bit (With the “quality” of the screen th 10 bit don’t give any benifit aynways). Now I see flickering in fullscreen, but as soon as I leave fullscren, the flicker is gone…
Maybe you can check this as well. Maybe we can solve this.
Honestly I think that this is a more general thing with FW12, which only happens when watching 10bit video and also maybe only on Fedora 42 KDE. I’ll probably try a live Image of gnome at some point…
I haven’t messed with the color resolution settings and I get this behavior as well, except the flickering only lessens, it doesn’t go away for me.
Though for me it’s really strange because not all content triggers it, its almost exclusively two anime shows I watch.
I don’t get the flickering on several other shows after watching for quite a while. It seems weird that that a specific show in the same video format would have any effect on it, and even weirder that it would persist into the bios and after a restart.
I do have a ticket but I don’t know that I have a ticket number. Support just decided to send me a new screen after we tried basically every troubleshooting step imaginable. I even swapped in my girlfriend’s motherboard from her 12 just to see if it was the motherboard, and no, its definitely the screen.
Yeah, I think it is triggered by HDR content. 10bit is the default, but I am convinced the screen does not support it. Can you try setting it manually to 8 bit?
Also are you sure that the same content does not trigger it on your GFs FW12?
