So I am on a Framework 13 with an AMD 7840U. I am running Linux Mint Cinnamon 21.3. I am using linux-oem-22.04c
as was recommended in a guide for mint on fw13amd. My kernel version is 6.0.8-57-generic
I have just recently (the last few hours) been experiencing extreme stability issues. It seems to be graphics related as far as I can tell but it has also happened a couple times while no heavy graphics tasks were occurring. The majority of the times that it happens is while I am trying to play minecraft. The issue has manifested itself in a few different ways so I am not sure exactly what type of problem is, like if it is even a hardware or software problem. Basically, what will happen is my whole system will lock up. If I am not running any games or anything, it pretty much doesn’t happen, although it did once while running a geekbench cpu benchmark. If I am playing minecraft, it happens within 1-3 minutes without fail. When everything locks up, audio stops playing, and USUALLY the screen freezes too, but there have been a couple times where video stays alive for long enough for me to alt tab to something else before everything dies. One time, when it happened firefox managed to spit out a not responding or similar crash popup before everything died. The system never shuts off as far as I can tell until I manually reboot it. Also, sometimes when this happens, I get a lot of graphical artifacts on my screen. stuff like rainbow colored squares (squares much bigger than pixels, like 5x5 pixels or something like that). This also does not happen every time. All of these symptoms are very inconsistent and seem to happen slightly differently every time. Sometimes the graphical artifacts go away after a couple seconds, other times they stick around. Once everything has frozen, the fn+spacebar keycombo to change the keyboard backlight brightness still works and the brightness still changes, but the caps lock light does not update when I press it. I know this is a lot of information but I am just trying to describe everything relating to this issue. I have a suspicion that it might be temps related but I am not sure. When I was messing around with stuff, I was trying to use sensors
to check temps. The sensor labeled k10temp-pci-00c3
which is as far as I can tell is the cpu temp gives me wildly varying readings. It can be as low as 56 and as high as 100. It is worth noting that one time I was very actively monitoring the temps, and the reading about a half a second before everything froze read 78, which goes against the idea that this is a temps issue. I have no idea what is going on here and any help or suggestions for what to try would be appreciated.
EDIT:
I wanted to add a couple things that I forgot to mention while writing this.
I have experienced very occasional crashes like this (like 4-5 times in the past few months), but this severity where I physically cannot play a game for more than a couple minutes just started a few hours ago. Another strange thing happened while I was testing this issue. At one point, the system didn’t freeze, but both devices plugged into the usb ports on either side stopped responding. It appeared as if the usb ports were not sending power either because the lights on the devices turned off. I tried unplugging the devices, removing the adapters, putting them back in, and reconnecting the devices and it did not fix it. It only fixed upon restarting the machine.
