FW16 AMD Ryzen 7 7040 series and Virtualization (QEMU/KVM)

Which Linux distro are you using? Arch

Which release version?
(if rolling release without a release version, skip this question)

(If rolling release, last date updated?)

Which kernel are you using? 6.12.13-1-lts

Which BIOS version are you using?3.03

Which Framework Laptop 16 model are you using? (AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series) AMD Ryzen 7 7040 series

I am interested in QEMU/KVM on my FW16 AMD Ryzen 7. The BIOS is not as intuitive as previous BIOS I have worked with to determine Virtualization is turned on or off as well as determining Nested Virtualization capabilities.

If the community could confirm FW16 AMD BIOS 3.03 has Virtualization turned on by default, great! however my tests (e.g. grep -E searches) were inconclusive as they did not provide a numeric value as much as a bunch of narrative with svm highlighted in red. again, if that means Virtualization is turned on, great. I just want to eliminate issues in advance before downloading QEMU, virt-manager, etc.

Thanks in advance!

I think you will find that VMs just work fine with default settings. No need to go into the bios to change anything.

I’m using kvm/qemu virtualisation on the Framework 16 on a daily basis. I’ve got proxmox 8.3 running just fine, and have also run my VM’s using Arch and Ubuntu LTS without any issue, even with dGPU passthrough and LookingGlass.

outstanding! thanks for the quick insight. I’m looking forward to building VMs. As a sidenote, has nested VMs been an issue? thanks again.
