FW16 firmware update failure, device bricked

I tried updating my firmware from 0.0.3.5 to 0.0.4.2 on my 7040 series FW16. I first tried running fwupd and when that emitted a kernel panic and graphical glitches (on Arch) I then created a FAT32 drive and put the contents of the zip file of the newest firmware for the 7040 series FW16 on it. Then I booted that drive and the firmware upgrade started. It took about 20 seconds until it said “Update Failed!!!”. Now it doesn’t boot at all anymore, at least there’s no output on the screen. The power button is illuminated and the fans spin and I also get LED blink codes (1 white, 12 green, 1 orange, 8 green) but absolutely no display output. There’s also no keyboard backlight blink anymore. What can I do about this?

Okay, my laptop was unresponsive for hours now, I turned it off and on again like 30 times and on the 31st time the keyboard backlight randomly turned on and the backlight of the LCD too but no output, I then turned it off and on like three more times and all of a sudden GRUB showed up. I’m hella confused. Still on 0.0.3.5 though and I’m scared to try the update again. Any advice?

Hi,

Just guessing here.
Did you read the bios release notes, instructions carefully? Maybe there is something you missed?
For example, some people miss that all usb devices need to be unplugged before, except the psu.
I would probably contact fw support via their web form, in case they have any further advice, and thus preventing you from bricking the device.

I didn’t have any devices plugged in. I also read the release notes carefully. So yeah, no idea what happened. I might contact them, but I’m just gonna keep it in a working state for now.

Please create a ticket with support if you haven’t already so they can take a look at what could have happened.

I can’t reproduce it anymore, it just works again. Really strange.
