In the process of replacing the Liquid Metal thermal interface on my CPU with PTM 7958 supplied by Framework, I caught the edge of some clear material with my spudger and I am now concerned that I may have accidentally removed some SMD components. Can anyone confirm how this corner of the CPU is supposed to look? If I have accidentally popped off some resistors, can anyone give me the specs of what I need to repair it? Soldering is not a problem.
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I didn’t see any images that clearly show the components that should be there—probably since everyone on that thread was able to do it without screwing it up!
here is link to official guide to replace liquid metal. it does not look like there is any smd element in left bottom corner https://guides.frame.work/Guide/Liquid+Metal+->+PTM+7958/402?lang=en
@wojciech_migas Wow, thanks! I definitely did not see those images. It does look like the bottom set of pads on the left and the left-most set of pads on the bottom row do not have anything on them. It looks like I knocked off three components towards the bottom of the left side, though. I’m looking into finding a local shop that may be able to replace them.
They are probably ceramic capacitors (needed to handle current draw spikes in different parts of the chip). You may be able to run, almost-idle, without a couple of them. (Just in case you want to test …)
Do you know of any decent way to figure out their capacitance? I have access to a multimeter, but I assume I can’t accurately measure the ones that are still installed while they are installed.
Can you find them and measure them? It’s a good idea to find them because some of them might get stuck in other places at your mainboard and could cause a short
I hadn’t considered that they might have lodged themselves somewhere else on the board—I’ll be sure to give it a thorough examination. I am surprised that I have not been able to find them in the material that I removed with my spudger. If it wasn’t for the fact that there appears to be solder on the pads, I would have assumed that there weren’t populated.
