I’m not 100% sure this goes here as I’m not a hardware or software developer, but…
Now that the 16" framework laptop is out, what sort of issues would stand in the way of building an eGPU enclosure for the 16" laptop’s GPU? From my limited understanding, the two major issues needed to be addressed are conveying information over the new connection standard that framework came up with, and actually powering the thing.
The ideas that I have in my head (just thought of it a little bit ago) and I haven’t written anything down yet, is powering a potential enclosure via USB-C, ideally taking our normal chargers to charge it. Then from there, the eGPU enclosure would connect to the laptop though either USB-C, HDMI, or Displayport. USB-C makes the most sense in my opinion because of the default assumption that we would have at least one USB-C card plugged in to charge off of. Obviously the 16" comes with a 180w power brick, but outside of that I don’t think there would have to be any other supplemental parts to add to a potential package.
A potential form factor idea would be to have the eGPU enclosure act as a riser on the back of the laptop, so we could conceivably just plug it right in and not have it take up additional desk space + added air flow through the bottom.
Thoughts? What other considerations would have to be made?
