[Guide] Install Intel Wireless Drivers on Linux

Same, Steve1. Kubuntu 22. Tried everything. No luck. Here’s what I did that worked:

  1. Plug into a cable connection and get the internet
  2. sudo apt install linux-modules-iwlwifi-generic
  3. sudo reboot

Voila. SecureBoot too. Seems to work fine so far (an hour in).

Still having the problem that all FW >v63 is breaking Wifi, deleting all newer versions works - so far. But that is certainly not the future proof way to deal with it. Something is amiss and I have not found the right bug in the right issue tracker yet…

Just dropping this here:

On Ubuntu or Fedora you do not and should not need to do anything in the terminal to install Intel wireless. If you have, then I’d start over with a clean install of Ubuntu/Fedora.

Both Ubuntu 22.04/22.10 and Fedora 37 have the provided wireless card working out the box.

This is not entirely my experience. I’m running 22.04 (with kernel 5.15.0-25-generic) which indeed worked initially, but it seems to sometimes fail to initialize with the errors shown above (e.g. kernel: iwlwifi 0000:aa:00.0: Failed to start RT ucode: -110). Because it is intermittent, maybe this problem did not show up in your testing. Or maybe there is something else different in the setup (maybe it depends on timing differences due to external hardware, or differences in kernel versions or so).

In any case, deleting 66.f1c864e0.0 ty-a0-gf-a0-66.ucode makes the problem disappear for me (by forcing the driver to fall back to the ty-a0-gf-a0-63.ucode version). I do have to delete the file again whenever a system update has reinstalled it (which happened just now, so I confirm this problem still exists for me).

On Ubuntu 22.04 right now, not seeing this issue locally. I think you’re right about it being intermittent as I have not been able to duplicate this on a clean installation. Ubuntu has recommended (to us) that users are running them OEM kernel. Have you tried this? This is the kernel I use.

Edit: Fresh ISO of 20.04 .5 has kernel 5.15.0-46-generic as the default.

I have a Comet Lake wireless.

Bluetooth will not work in Linux but works in Windows

Folks, I want to be clear.

On supported Ubuntu 22.04.3 using the correct OEM C kernel, nothing is needing to be compiled, etc, with Intel wireless.

The moment you start copying stuff from random forums, my ability to replicate goes out the window. :slight_smile:

If however, this appears to be untrue in your situation, please provide me with the output of:

sudo lshw -C network | grep -A 12 -i 'Wireless'

This will assume you’re on a supported distro such as Ubuntu 22.04.3 or Fedora 38/39.

What’s up everyone. Though I don’t own a Framework laptop, I’m running Mint 21.3 and just did something that worked for me.

  1. I went to the Intel Linux Driver Downloads page from Foxtrek_64’s orignal post
  2. I ran the following command…

lspci | grep -i net

to find out what wireless adapter i had in my computer. it returned…

  1. I went onto the driver downloads page, and using ctrl+f typed in “7265” and i downloaded the corresponding drivers (for me, those were the “Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265, Intel® Dual Band Wireless-N 7265, Intel® Wireless-N 7265” drivers, kernel 4.2+) to my downloads folder.

  2. I extracted the tar file to downloads. The folder was named “iwlwifi-7265-ucode-25.30.14.0” Inside were the following:
    a. iwlwifi-7265-14.ucode
    b. iwlwifi-7265D-14.ucode
    c. LICENSE.iwlwifi-7265-ucode
    d. README.iwlwifi-7265-ucode

  3. Here’s the important piece. In Foxtrek_64’s original post, they said that the only thing that was to be replaced was the version number of the driver. I tried that originally, but nothing worked, basically because the directory didn’t exist. Here’s one such error that the terminal returned on my numerous attempts.

cp: cannot stat 'iwlwifi-ty-a0-gf-a0-14.gcode': No such file or directory

What worked for me was setting the cd to the extracted folder, then using sudo cp to copy the .ucode file to /lib/firmware. It looked like this:

cd /home/ivor/Downloads/iwlwifi-7265-ucode-25.30.14.0
sudo cp iwlwifi-7265-14.ucode /lib/firmware

  1. reboot. it’s been working for as long as it took me to write this post so i hope it helps someone else. the main takeaway is to sudo cp the entire filename, not just change the version number.
