Hinges don't hold lid in place while moving laptop, should I switch to 4kg hinges?

I received my Framework 13 in October last year (2024) and during normal use the hinges are fine. However, when I lift the laptop even slightly more than gently the lid tends to swings open or shut without direct contact. I would prefer the lid to stay put while moving the laptop, even if I have to sacrifice “one handed openability”.

I’m assuming I have the 2nd generation 3.5kg hinges but I don’t know for sure, so my questions are…

  1. How can I tell which version of hinges I have installed on this laptop?
  2. If I do have the 2nd generation 3.5kg hinges, would switching to the 1st gen 4kg hinges improve my situation at all?

I swapped to the 4.0kg hinges for the same reason. I find it improved but did not entirely diminish the issue. It’s enough of an improvement that I am happy, but an abrupt enough upward jerk might still cause the lid to flop backwards.

Did you swap from the 2nd generation 3.5kg hinges?

That I’m not super sure about, as I don’t entirely know what defines the generations. I bought this laptop about a year and a half ago, so…maybe. The original hinges were quite floppy, I’ll say that much.

I don’t entirely know what defines the generations.

Yeah, that’s what I’m wondering as well. Thanks for your input.

Have you contacted support? They can help with any available options.

I just put the 4kg hinges into my 12th gen FW 13, it made a world of difference for me. I had the same problem of moving around the house and the screen would go whichever way gravity wanted it to. Now it stays in place.

I ended up installing 4kg hinges and also agree they make a big difference.

Personally, I’d stick with the lower-torque hinges after reading about all the broken displays from seemingly gentle handling (i.e. “i just pushed on the bezel with my finger and it got black lines and I had to replace the display”).

Stiffening the hinges increases the strain on the lid and thus the display panel.
