I received my Framework 13 in October last year (2024) and during normal use the hinges are fine. However, when I lift the laptop even slightly more than gently the lid tends to swings open or shut without direct contact. I would prefer the lid to stay put while moving the laptop, even if I have to sacrifice “one handed openability”.
I swapped to the 4.0kg hinges for the same reason. I find it improved but did not entirely diminish the issue. It’s enough of an improvement that I am happy, but an abrupt enough upward jerk might still cause the lid to flop backwards.
That I’m not super sure about, as I don’t entirely know what defines the generations. I bought this laptop about a year and a half ago, so…maybe. The original hinges were quite floppy, I’ll say that much.
I just put the 4kg hinges into my 12th gen FW 13, it made a world of difference for me. I had the same problem of moving around the house and the screen would go whichever way gravity wanted it to. Now it stays in place.
Personally, I’d stick with the lower-torque hinges after reading about all the broken displays from seemingly gentle handling (i.e. “i just pushed on the bezel with my finger and it got black lines and I had to replace the display”).
Stiffening the hinges increases the strain on the lid and thus the display panel.
