HOWTO: Removing the binding of the framework F12 key on Windows

On the Framework 16, pressing F12 is bound to opening the Framework modules webpage in your default browser. This short guide will tell you how to unbind this within Windows.

Method A: (Faster) “Hard” way:

  1. Open RegEdit
  2. In the address bar, enter Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey
  3. Find the key (folder) number that contains a URL file to be opened. This will probably be 16
  4. Delete values so it only contains the “(Default)” value.

Method B: (Safer) Using WinAero Tweaker
This does the same thing, but in a more user-friendly way.

  1. Download and Install WinAero Tweaker
  2. Run the Setup
  3. Search “Keyboard”, and select “Redefine Extra Keys on Keyboard”
  4. Under “Media”, you should see that it is bound to opening a .url file. Simply set this back to “do nothing” or “default action”
  5. Click “Apply”
  6. Done! Apply any other tweaks you like as well.

Enjoy!
