Hello!
This is my first post, I am a prospective framework 12 owner. I was considering ordering one after reviews come out. My use-case would be work, notes with the stylus, and being able to run moderate-light games + emulation on the go.
I was wondering whether a new framework 12 would perform better or worse than my current computer. I am using a thinkpad yoga L13 gen 2 with an 11th gen intel i5-1145G7 @ 2.60GHz with an intel Iris Xe. I understand that both framework 12 models come with an intel UHD GPU. Deciphering intels cpu and gpu naming schemes confuses me greatly, especially with understanding that different generations provide greatly different results in performance.
If I were to get a new framework 12, would this computer run gaming and software better than my current computer?
Assuming you go with the more expensive 1334U CPU for the Framework 12, it would be about 40% faster than your old CPU. The integrated GPU however would have a similar speed as your old laptop.
I wouldn’t expect the Framework 12 to run much faster than your older laptop just based on the CPU, but if the bottleneck with your old Laptop is e.g. a slow SSD or not enough RAM, a properly configured Framework 12 could still be much better.
As Jonathan Haas mentioned, according to Intel’s specs page, the i5-1334U processor has virtually the same iGPU specs as your current processor. They both show Iris Xe with 80 compute units. It’s single channel RAM, but DDR5 is faster than DDR4. It’s hard to say if one or the other may pull a head slightly, depending on some variables, but it would probably be fairly similar in iGPU performance.
The i3-1315U is labeled UHD and has only 64 compute units. It also has one video codec engine instead of two. The CPU is probably similar or a bit faster than your current computer, but the iGPU performance may be a little slower.
It’s possible there were architectural improvements to the iGPU cores between the 11th and 13th gen, but I doubt it.
