From Dave2D:
Does anyone know when Framework plans on adding support for and selling the 13 with Intel Core Ultra Series 2?
This will never happen as the Intel Core Ultra Series 2 have soldered RAM directly on the CPU package and only come in 16GB and 32GB variants. Maybe next gen Intel Core products would be considered if they support CAMM2 or something that’s at least replaceable. It is worthy of note that Intel’s previous CEO Pat said that on package RAM wouldn’t be considered for next gen.
Thank you, xoe!
Given the significant performance difference, particularly in battery life, curious how you think about waiting for the hypothetically compatible next Gen. Thanks again for responding to my post!
Core Ultra Series 2 contains several families of CPU.
So far Arrow Lake-S and Lunar Lake have been released by Intel, however Arrow Lake-S is desktop only and Lunar Lake doesn’t support replaceable ram (which Framework’s CEO reiterated on the recent Q&A is against their philosophy, it wasn’t specifically in context of Lunar Lake but I doubt he would’ve called soldered memory against their philosophy if Framework planned on releasing one soon).
Arrow Lake-H is another family of CPUs categorized under Core Ultra Series 2. Arrow Lake-H is the laptop variant of Arrow Lake-S and is the direct successor to the Meteor Lake-H that Framework currently offers. Arrow Lake-H is expected to support replaceable ram.
Intel has stated that Arrow Lake-H is going to be released in the first quarter of 2025. Framework won’t make any announcement until after Intel announces it (and following historical trends probably not till at least a couple months after).
That is terrific news, Kyle! It suggests setting expectations for mid summer, which is about when I will be in serious need of an upgrade.
Curious what additional advantages and learning Intel will build into the Arrow Lake-H based on 9 months of real world Lunar Lake data (although my ignorance is clearly showing on the processor development process). Thank you!
Not necessarily. Lunar lake has soldered ram onto the package but no other core ultra 200 series is confirmed to have that. Depending on the memory support, this might force framework’s hand to switch to lpcamm2.
That’s right Core Ultra 200H series. Hope Framework will launch those mainboards asap.
