Interest in custom 3D printing mods for Framework 16

Hi all, I’m a mechanical engineering undergrad and I’ve been dabbling with CAD and 3D printing for a few years now. I’m interested in the customizability of the Framework laptops, so I looked at the Github repository and started thinking about replacing some of the external components with other materials such as carbon fiber and other engineering composites (just for fun). However, I’m unsure about how difficult some of the components would be to disassemble, such as the expansion cards and the top plate. I was wondering if there was anyone else here that might have already done some work on similar mods that could steer me in the right direction. Thank you!

The expansion cards that slot into the sides? They are easy. Two screws. You can even see them through the translucent cards.

Which part do you mean by the top plate?

If by top plate, you mean “Top Cover” (part with framework logo on it, houses the screen) or the “Input Cover” (houses keyboard), I think it would be quite difficult since they are made out of metal with glued and molded plastic and foam parts along with the metal structure.

Thank you! I was really nervous about those cards, so it’s great to know that there’s nothing to worry about! As for the top cover, I’m referring to the top of the laptop with the Framework logo. Thanks for your help!

I just replied to another user, but your first guess is right. Are there any clips holding that top cover to the screen or is it just adhered directly?

Sounds like you haven’t seen the Framework repair guides. As the one for replacing the display will show exactly how it’s attached.

Also, there are some CADs created by a different user. Not sure how complete they are.

Perhaps you could contribute to some that aren’t complete.
