Is it worth to wait for next gen?

Hello,

I am now considering buying a new Framework 13, but hesitated before pulling the trigger.

I know that they decided to skip Ryzen 8000 series, but I heard AMD will release something in CES next year.

I am a little torn. The question is, is it worth to wait for FW’s next gen AMD laptop (or alternatively buy current gen cheaper in the future)? Let’s say, possibilities they release a new model within 6 months?

If AMD announces something in January during CES, it will take several months before it becomes remotely somewhat available and then if you add on top of this how long it took for Framework to make the current mobos generally available (without preorder waiting list), I think there are very slim chances you could get such a new Framework model into your hands before September. Of course I may be wrong: this just a guess.
Anyway, it seems that you will be able to make a much more educated decision after the CES when you know how important new features of whatever AMD announces are for you and whether they are worth your wait.

Welcome to the community! (I am a simple man - I see a banner saying 'let’s welcome into the community, and I do so!)

EDIT: I realise now that my user-name makes it sound as if I work for Framework. But I don’t. Oops.

I seem to remember a video interview with Framework’s CEO where he talked about being on the bleeding edge with the AMD 7000 series was a mistake, that they don’t like being the first vendor out with a new chip because then they are directly responsible for working with AMD to fix the issues (paraphrasing from memory, obviously).

With that being the case, I think it would be a very long while to wait for Framework even if AMD does announce something.

Doubt it. We’re in marginal gains here, so why wait just for a single digit percent performance uptick, or minor reduction in older SKU’s price ?

If you want a Framework now, but a Framework now

So it’s all about money. I don’t want to buy a laptop with already high premium and see the price goes down right after purchase. But it seems we are not getting any new SKU soon so i may buy one shortly.

Not sure where you’re located, but if it’s in the US, Trump’s threatened tariff war is something else to consider. If he goes through with it (no one can predict whether he will right now, likely not even Trump), it’ll make essentially everything a good chunk more expensive, whether new technology or not.

Might have effects even outside the US – I’m in Canada, and it wouldn’t surprise me if tech items get more expensive here too, though almost certainly not as much as in the States. Companies will have to make up for the revenue lost because of slower sales due to the tariffs, and they won’t be able to do it solely from charging US customers more.

That is true, however what AMD is expected to announce is Kraken Point.

Kraken Point is architecturally very similar to the Strix Point. It is expected to use the same core architecture, the same GPU architecture, the same firmware, the same pinout, that same drivers, etc. It’s just smaller and cheaper (and therefore better suited for the Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 tiers of CPU that Framework hhas historically targeted rather than the Ryzen 9 tier).

Strix Point was released nearly 6 months ago and other laptop manufacturers have already worked with AMD to iron out the issues. I think it is reasonable to assume that most of that will translate over to Kraken Point.

If I had to get a FW13 now, I would probably either get either the AMD or last-gen Intel. I don’t need a super fast super having every feature they can pack into it board anyway, and I also just don’t have that kind of money anyway (I’m on disability, which means I get about 75% of the minimum pay) which is why I bought the 11th gen Intel 13, in the hope (so far so good) that upgrading the laptop would be a good deal better financially. I went from 11 to AMD, which did mean it was pricier because of the DDR5 ram, but still.

I guess that was a long not entirely an answer.

Thinking on money, I would recommend waiting until January to purchase a new PC, as it offers several advantages. Post-holiday sales often provide excellent discounts, allowing you to save money while still getting a high-quality device; not Claer on Frame.Work to be honest, but the normally as it goes. Additionally, avoiding the holiday rush gives you the chance to carefully research options and make a well-informed decision without feeling pressured. Waiting a little longer seems like a thoughtful and practical choice, on my opinion.

Framework does not do sales. They don’t seem to believe in them.

Framework has never once had an actual “sale”. There won’t be any Post-holiday sale.
Only discounts are, when a new generation comes out, they will reduce the price of old models. That is just done to help sell off the old stock.
