Hello,
I have just installed my Dual M2 card to the expansion bay and there were some issues I would like to point out. First of all, the guide is wrong in regards to the thickness of the pads. In the box, you get: 1x 1.75mm (B), 2x 2.25mm (C) and 2x 1.25mm (A). The correct way of assembling should be: put the 1.75mm under the card itself and and leave the 2.25 for single-sided SSDs and 1.25mm ones for double-sided SSDs. In the guide, it says you should put the 1.75mm one underneath the SSD and 2.25 one under the card itself.
Here are several reasons why I am convinced this is the better order:
-
Double-sided SSDs are approximately 1mm thicker than the single-sided ones. Hence if 1.25mm is meant for double-sided ones, 2.25mm fits for the single-sided versions.
-
1.75mm was too thin for my SSD (Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB). I made a simple experiment: I screwed the SSD to the card without any pad and tried to slide the 1,75mm one between the M2 card and the SSD. Even with the foils on it, it slid inside very easily meaning that it wouldn’t even touch the SSD if I put it underneath it.
-
1.75mm pad is thick enough for the M2 board itself. After installing it, the board touches the metal bottom of the expansion bay shell.
-
If I should put the 2.25mm pad underneath the board, why the hell did I get 2 of those?
Apart from that, I had an issue with the interposer itself. I received a new one and it did not fit. It was not bent enough.
If anyone at framework is reading this, please update the guide… Really, the laptop is meant to be repairable but if you want average home users to repair their laptops, you can’t have incorrect guides and ask your users to bend the interposer.
