Just built my Laptop 16 with AMB Ryzen AI 300 processor. Can I use Ubuntu 24.04, or do I need to start with 25.x+?

Which Linux distro are you using?

My old laptop had 24.04. I am migrating my /home drive to the new Laptop 16. I have a fresh OS drive ready to install Ubuntu. Do I need to use 25.x+, or is 24.04 ok?

Which release version?
(if rolling release without a release version, skip this question)

(If rolling release, last date updated?)

Which kernel are you using?

Which BIOS version are you using?

Which Framework Laptop 16 model are you using? (AMD Ryzen™ 7040 Series)

AMD Ryzen AI 300

24.04 will work nicely!

Thanks!!

However, the installer died/crashed (required forced power off) at the Enable WiFi section, and I had to reboot, put the laptop is airplane mode, install Ubuntu 24.04, reboot, enable WiFi, and manually apt update/upgrade.

Also, when the installation finished and I was prompted to reboot, I did, only to have the installer die/crash again (required forced power off) and no prompt to with safe to remove the USB boot media.

Never had that problem on System76 or Dell or Surface Pro laptops.

Framework publishes some helpful guides for different Linux distro installations - I followed the guide I’ve linked below and didn’t have any of the problems you described.

Actually Ubuntu 24 is not compatible with the ryzen ai 300 series… The kernel version in 24.04 is 6.14, which is below the minimum supported version of 6.15.

You can see the difference in the Linux compatibility chart: https://frame.work/laptop16?tab=linux

They recommend 25.10+ for 300 series and 24.04+ for 7040 series. I would recommend just going for the latest LTS in either case, which is 26.04. My experience with Ubuntu upgrades has not been great so I would rather just install a newer version to begin with.

You can use any distro version you wish.
The only bit that is hardware support dependent is the linux kernel.
Of course, if the os installer has an old linux kernel, you might not be able to install easily.
Even then, you install linux using a differerent, older laptop, once installed, switch to a newer linux kernel, then you can move the nvme ssd to the new laptop and it will work.
