Lack of OLED screen is the only thing holding me back from buying

The lack of OLED screen as an upgrade option is the only thing holding from back from buying.

Is there any hope OLED could be coming soon?

Why do you need an OLED?

No one knows, they don’t post a hardware roadmap

Because it’s what I want.

Let me ask you, why do you think OLED screens exist?

Not going to lie to you, the lack of OLED on the 13s and 16s is a bummer, but all around they are good laptops. If you really are interested, the 2.8k for the 13 and regular for the 16 are pretty amazing as far as LCD screens go. When/if they release an oled screen you can buy that and either sell, keep as a replacement, or use for another project like an external monitor. Overall Id recommend grabbing a framework and wish you good luck.

Consider yourself lucky if that’s the only thing in your checklist that’s missing.

I’m waiting for longer runtime battery life, longer sleep battery life, better speaker quality, better microphone array quality, calibrated display, 1000 nit+ display, Fn-Lock keyboard indicator, dedicated pg up/down key, thicker chassis (larger battery, better cooler, quieter fan), better hinge tuning / stability (angular opening force), better lid stability (tighter bounce range, lower bounce resonance). stiffer lid / cover (less dishing under pressure), larger sensor on the webcam, face tracking in webcam…

Every year, I’m thinking, ā€œis this the one?ā€ā€¦yet? Seeing the lack of changes in the above areas, I’ve yet to bring myself to buy another unit.

honestly i get it since it would make sense to have an easily replacable oled screen for when burn in becomes a problem every 5+ years

my hypothetical question is would you want an oled version of the 2.8k screen or a super money 4k oled?

2.8k 90hz would be pretty sweet, 4k would need fractional scaling which I still want to avoid if possible.

Vrr on oled is still pretty bad so 90hz is a solid compromise between performance and power use.

From your list of ā€œneedsā€, are you a visual artist? Filmmaker or photographer? I do hobby photography and find that, after calibration, the framework monitor to be more than enough for publishing to the web/youtube…

For anything print (or if I care to go full ā€œcolor NERDā€), I use a calibrated higher gamut monitor for that work, as well as a calibrated LG OLED tv for video work, either of which I could hook up to the laptop, but… I have a desktop for that… don’t know if the market is big enough for frameowkr to put their eggs into the ā€œlinux filmmakers using resolveā€ basket haha

Don’t take what I am writing as an attack–> just curious if you have a true need for all of those… needs, or if you just want the specs for their own sake, like HP on a car

It would be nice to have a modular, up gradable ā€œcreator laptopā€, but… that is why I have a 6 year old desktop with a 2070 that works great (and is cheap and able to be cheaply upgraded). I can only imagine the cost if framework did that with a laptop.

… sorry for the aside… back to the regularly scheduled forum post…

Same here. Have an NEC PA272W hooked up. But I also intend to use the laptop on the go for [HDR] media consumption. That monitor is due for an upgrade, as well.

That’s the good thing about modular / DIY / pick your panel (when they do finally have an OLED offering).

Regarding ā€œneedsā€, that’s debatable. I’m not sure if I ā€œneedā€ it…just like I’m not sure if I ā€œneedā€ anything, not even food / water. It’s a desire to ā€˜stay’ alive, maybe. The ā€œneedā€ of food / water is forced upon me by physiology… So with that, I guess ā€˜needs’ is an individual’s definition of varying degree of compromises.

Genuinely the speakers aren’t that bad on either, I use a tool (for windows) called FXSound. Honestly it makes the speakers sound great with just a little tuning.

Sorry, this is where I subjectively think differently (even with EQ).

(Baseline where I’m coming from: earbuds: IER-Z1R, headset for Teams call: Audeze Maxwell, desktop speaker: LS50 Meta. This a ā€˜good’ [enough], to me. I don’t own anything exceptional though, not an audiophile.)

I really wish they had an OLED for the FW16

Haha: my fault for using the word ā€œneedā€ā€¦ a word with many meanings.

I get it: I would be ā€œsweetā€ (to use your word) to have all of the things you mentioned: I would appreciate all of them… and I could add to your list.

I hope framework implements them all, along with a rich 3rd party marketplace for open hardware, so if you and I want an OLED bad enough, we can source it ourself and put it ā€œout thereā€ for others.
