While I was installing windows 11 onto my framework 13 it just so happened to die because i stepped away in between a full charge and installing windows without powering it off. Now when I power it on the same message keeps repeating.
“The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows click “OK” to restart the computer, and then restart the installation”
Whenever i restart it this screen keeps on popping up. Do i need to reinstall the windows 11 disk image along with rufus to my usb drive and retype the key? Completely restart windows installation or do i need to do something else?
It sounds like something became corrupted when it powered down. I think you’ll have to just start the Windows install process from scratch.
At least, that’s what I’d do. There may be other ways around it. Maybe someone will chime in with one. But if it was me, I’d probably just start over. Not sure if you have to re-do the USB, maybe just get back to the boot menu, boot from the USB, and re-format and re-start the install from scratch.
Either way, welcome to the community! Good luck. I hope you get it sorted out and this isn’t too big of a speed bump in the way of getting your computer up and running.
Hopefully, nothing got corrupted on the USB drive. So you may be able to start over from step 3 of the above guide. If that doesn’t work, then you may have to try from step one of the other guide, unfortunately.
Note that you will likely have to tap F12 as the computer turns on, in order to get to the boot menu. What is likely happening right now is that the installation process has begun, but then got corrupted, so it keeps trying to boot into the corrupted, partial install. If you use F12 to get to the boot menu, you can boot from the USB drive and start the install process over.
Thank you lots i pressed f12 as it said to in the instructions and its downloading now i got so anxious because having the laptop die wasn’t part of the list..
It is currently downloading so thank you so so much your a lifesaver!!! Literally you are!!!
As described above, just restarting the installation will probably solve the problem. But only probably.
I bought a Framework 16 to replace my personal laptop during the pre-order phase, got it at the end of May last year. I fell in love with it, so when my employer decided it was time to replace my six-year-old work laptop this year and gave me the choice, I asked for another of them.
I use Linux on my personal machines, but my workplace is based around Windows, so after putting the machine together, I started installing Windows 11. It would get to a certain point, say that it was going to reboot, and do so – but would never come back up. The screen’s backlight was on, but the screen itself was completely black. After a minute or two the fans would start spinning audibly, and it would just sit there.
To make a long story short, eventually I had to force it off (by holding the power button down for something like eight seconds), start it up again, repeat those steps until it came up with a “something went wrong” window, and navigate to an option for something like “startup repair” (it’s buried, had to go into one menu, select something to get into a second one, and that’s where I found it; sorry, I didn’t take notes on exactly how I got there). After doing that, it finished the installation without any problem.
This was just a little over a week ago, so there’s a good chance that others will run into the same issue. If so, I hope this helps.
Good you finally got it working human for me it was stated on the list i just need to look better i thought i read it all like 3 times i guess i didn’t though.. atleast not good enough lol
