Linux FW16 Ubuntu 24.04.2 - USB Hub Disconnecting when Discord is open

Ubuntu 24.04.2

Which kernel are you using? - 6.11.0-17-generic

Which BIOS version are you using? - 03.05

Which Framework Laptop 16 model are you using? - Framework 16 Ryzen 7 7840HS, Radeon RX 7700S.

All help appreciated! I’m happy to provide more logs or redirect this question to other forums as needed.
First I’ll cover behavior, then current troubleshooting attempts, then hardware details, then my known logs.

Core behavior:

I have a Dell USB Hub that connects to my FW16 for several USB devices (Mouse, Keyboard, Mic, etc), as well as my displays through Display port. When in a Discord voice call, my USB devices seem to disconnect, and take 20-30s to reconnect. This happens frequently, and has only been observed while my mic is active in a discord voice chat. The result is that I lose access to mouse, keyboard, usb speakers, and microphone, all defaulting to the options on the Framework chassis. This happens at irregular intervals, but is fairly (and annoyingly) frequent.
Important detail - The external displays do NOT disconnect during this time, despite also being connected to the laptop through the same Dell USB hub.

Troubleshooting attempts:

  • All of this hardware is new, so I don’t have extended experience, but it has been over a week trying to resolve this issue on my own now without success.
  • First step seems like that using my mic in combination with my other devices is too much for my hub to handle. However, I’ve used other applications with the microphone (Google meet) for an hour+ without running into the issue. I’ve also used another laptop running a different Debian distro that uses that same hub, with the same peripherals, with both my mic AND camera on for Google meet for multiple hours with no issues as well.
  • I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling Discord, as well as switching between versions (snap install, vs .deb downloaded from the Discord website.)
  • I’ve update the hub’s firmware, and also downgraded it to every available version of firmware currently available.
  • Leaving the mic muted in discord nearly eliminates the issue, but it seems that it still rarely occurs even while muted if I’m in the call. (Possibly related to transitioning on and off during push to talk though). Edit 2025-02-16: Forcibly gathered more cases where being in a discord call while muted, with others still speaking, till causes the disconnect
  • I’ve tried switching some of the USB ports being used to a different secondary hub with dedicated power. So thats a DC-powered hub plugged directly into another DC-powered hub, but the issue still persisted.
  • Minimal applications foreground applications have usually been open while this has occurred. It occurred with only Google Chrome and Discord open. It occurred with only Discord, Steam, and Tabletop Simulator open.
  • Sitting in an empty discord chat, with my mic unmuted, with no audio being played from any application. The issue still occurs here.
  • Moving the Anker USB hub to a different Dell USB hub port does not help.

Hardware details:

  • Framework 16 Ryzen 7 7840HS, Radeon RX 7700S.
  • The included 180 W power adapter is plugged into expansion slot 1.
  • The Dell USB hub is plugged into expansion slot 4.
  • The USB hub is a Dell WD19S 130W
  • Two Monitors are connected via display ports.
  • One of the monitors I’m using as a USB A passthrough for my Blue Snowball Ice Microphone and my logitech C615 Webcam. This connection is using the bottom-back port on the Dell dock. The webcam is generally not active when the issue occurs.
  • The top-back port on the dell dock is connected to an Anker Ultra Slim 4-port USB data hub
(As an alternative to the Anker hub, I’ve also tried using a direct-powered UGREEN USB 3.0 4-port switch, which was seeing the same issue)
    Connected to the hub are:
  • A wireless dongle for a Keychron Q3 Max keyboard.
  • A wireless dongle for a Razer Naga V2 HyperSpeed mouse.
  • A wireless dongle for an 8bitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless controller. Generally not active when the issue occurs.
  • A Sound BlasterX G1 portable sound card.

Short version - I have a wireless keyboard dongle, wireless mouse dongle, and a sound card dongle attached to a hub, which itself is attached to a hub, which has another hub/passthrough attached to a different port with a microphone connection. These connection all seem to disappear at the same time, though the display port connections have always remained entirely stable.

Known logs:

There are no logs in /var/crash.

dmesg shows a ton of entries for:
audit: type=1400 audit(1739747156.281:1656277): apparmor="DENIED" operation="ptrace" class="ptrace" profile="snap.discord.discord" pid=82141 comm="Utils" requested_mask="read" denied_mask="read" peer="unconfined"
Though light searching on this makes it seem specific to the snap version of discord, so maybe I’ll reinstall a different version later. Part of this concerns me, I hope it’s related to the kauditd_printk_skb: 239 callbacks suppressed that continuously increases.

From this, it looks like the main source of the errors is in my 4-port anker hub connected to the Dell hub. However, this is also the piece that I’ve swapped for a different hub during my troubleshooting. This hub contains keyboard, mouse, controller, and audio dongles, NOT the microphone dongle, yet the issue seems to only occur with active Microphone activity. I’ve also tried moving the Anker hub to different ports in the dell hub, but the issue continues to persist.

You can get rid of the ptrace errors by disabling the “now playing” status stuff.

Discord very aggressively scans devices to see what’s present on the system. I found that it was making my battery life worse since it was keeping my webcam from going to sleep even when I wasn’t using it due to it scanning all /dev/video devices every 3 seconds. So it’s probable that there’s some sort of scan it’s doing which is messing with your devices sometimes, perhaps due to udev rules or something.

I use vesktop, which is another option to try. You could also open Discord in a browser, though then you lose global keybindings. Testing it in a browser seems worthwhile just to narrow down the possible causes.

Yeah, the issue seems to have been caused by any of the application versions of Discord. I’ve been using the browser form of Discord for a few weeks now without the issue reoccurring.

For any other readers, I was experiencing the issues with Discord 0.0.82 - 0.0.85, and have not tried any newer versions.
