LTE Cat 4 Cell Modem Card

I also would like to see this in the near future. This product would be an extraordinary help when taking my Framework on trips or anytime I’m not home and don’t want to use free WiFi. Definitely following this thread to see where it goes!

Seeing as i ordered this 9 months ago I am only growing more eager to get it.
I hope @Josh_Cook can get us an update soon.

agreed… 9months :sob:

@Josh_Cook could we get an update of some form here? you have a significant number of paying customers who have been left in the dark for months. i’ve been waiting for this card almost as long as i was waiting for the fw 16.

from looking at your site, i2clabs.com.au, i see a bunch of other frame.work expansion cards. were they also sold to customers at the same time as the 4g card? i can’t find posts to that effect from you on the forums.

i have to admit i’m pretty disappointed overall. i want the card, and don’t want to cancel the order, but i’m basically just sitting on my hands waiting to even hear what the status is.

prototypes arrived in your hands on aug 3. we’ve had no actual updates since then. why?

edit: i sent josh an email and linked this thread. hopefully he will provide some update to customers shortly either here or via email.

If you check his post history, you’ll see this from another project thread

You’ll also see mention of the time being medical related.

When one does community projects in their spare time, it can take a good while sometimes. As there is only so much spare time in a day. And unexpected delays I think are standard with anything beyond the most simple. Think of it like kickstarter, you don’t join unless you are fully prepared to wait 3-4 times the initial ETA. And there’s still not a guarantee.

we’re at or past 4x the time, as per the post you’re replying to.

if a kickstarter went cold with no updates, this is regularly called a rugpull. this isn’t the defense you think it is.

you may note, again as per the post you’re replying to, that i’m asking specifically for an update. obviously you submit an email address when you purchase, and one original update did go out to all of us. since then, only since i emailed him directly in may.

i completely agree. When i ordered i was told 2-3 months. that was Feb 2024. Additionally i havent received a reply to any of my emails to Josh since May.

Like you said i dont want to cancel the order because i want the card. But everything about this is screaming scam at this point. Prove us wrong Josh.

Hey folks, your concerns about the passage of time are legitimate. But as Josh himself said in the post I (re)quoted above, it will be at least another 6 days before Josh catches up on this (and other) threads.

In my mind, a “scam” is a particular kind of criminal activity which is a country mile away from what’s happening here. We’re supporting a lone hardware developer to create bespoke stuff. I invested in the R&D for its own sake. If I end up with a handy bit of kit that will be icing on the cake.

edited to add: I unintentionally created a reply to @MJ1. Having realised my mistake, I hoped the editor would allow me to remove the “reply” property. If it has that capability it’s not obvious.

how many days has it been now?

well it has been much longer than 6 days. Additionally, The email addresses Josh has used to contact me are deactivated. There is no contact info on his site.
it really looks like we will never see this product and i will never be able to get my money back.

taking money and not delivering on a product is wrong, whether you think its a scam or not. the specific word doesnt matter.

It’s probably time for some else to pick up and make the cards if josh is too busy.

i’ve initiated a chargeback / fraud claim with my bank this afternoon. i’m no longer willing to wait simply based on the principle that this silence is extremely disrespectful to people who paid money in advance.

i was told ~10 business days for a response from my bank. hopefully - unlike the person we purchased this device from - they can stick to it. i will return with an update when i hear from them.

as for getting one done elsewhere; we do have the original open-source designs from the liberatedsystems team, however i’m not sure how viable a state that was left in. i also don’t know anyone experienced enough with electrical engineering. usb-serial firmware would also probably have to be at least adjusted, if not written, to support the radio on the board.

if i was to get it done again/custom i’d probably shoot for a 5g module instead of 4g, may as well do it properly. honestly though, i think i might just use my phone and hotspot.

edit: i flagged this post with the mods too so that they are across the fact a third-party vendor selling devices on here has gone vaporware. i would want to know, personally.

I emailed him and asked for an update or to refund my orders. Well I just got email confirmation of the refunds. Hope this is helpful.

Bummer. I was really looking forward for this product, it’s a killer feature for me.
I found this in the wild… Looks too large to try and disassemble one and fit into a long expansion card.
Our salvation would be someone willing to design/modify one of these to make it USB-C and retrofit them in an ex-card enclosure.

Both the products you linked only use the usb connector for power, providing internet through a separate wifi connection. So that’s not ideal.

How about this one? or are they all the same?

That one looks good! One possibility is getting the microusb version, desoldering the connector and soldering in a usb c connector. Then 3d print a case and you’re good to go.

Just read up on this thread. I got one of the Liberated system LTE expansion cards and i am willing to part with it, as i rarely use it.
It works max speeds i got is 150Mbit and 50Mbit iirc. If someone really wants it, preferably around Frankfurt a.M.
