My first batch Framework developed an issue where a couple of the keys were not working on the right side of the keyboard. While trying to troubleshoot, I had the case open and suddenly the laptop started to boot as I was reseating the touchpad cable. Got smoke from both ends. Laptop turned on, but keyboard did not work. Could work with an external, but also computer now shuts off frequently and always takes 3 tries before it will turn on again (I get a series of green, red and blue flashing lights on the side, but in different sequences each time)
I can’t afford to be without a laptop for very long, so want to get replacement parts ordered right away, but a) there’s no input covers currently available and b) not totally sure what I should do about the Mainboard. I currently have an 11th gen i7 (65 something I think).
Appreciate any advice, as I’m an enthusiast, but also an idiot.
Contact Support about the input covers as they may have some stock on hand that they can sell to you. As for the mainboard, if you want to purchase one, there are 12th and 13th gen boards in stock that should arrive within a week from ordering.
Thanks, I have a ticket open with support, but they haven’t gotten back yet on whether they have input covers. For mainboard replacement would love some opinions on the bang for buck sweet spot. I’m currently unemployed and got like 5 unexpected emergency things I need to spend money on all in the last couple of weeks, so very tempted to just go with the cheapest replacement I can, unless there are really compelling reasons to go for something at the mid-level.
Best bang for your buck would be the i5 1340p. You still get the firmware improvements made to 13th gen over 12th gen as well as 4 P cores and 8 E cores. In single threaded tasks, it’ll be as fast as the i7 1360P and i7 1370P and will nearly match the i7 1360P in multicore (as they have the same core counts just different clock speeds). The 2 extra cores on the i7 1370P are not worth it in my opinion unless you are a professional that can take advantage of it.
sounds like you wouldn’t need the full input cover, but just a new keyboard.
as said before, a 13th gen board is probably for the best. You could also look into the Framework Outlet for a full 11th gen laptop and keep the original laptop for replacement parts other than the keyboard and mainboard. (though that may end up being more expensive than replacing individual parts)
Support is still getting a lot of tickets right now, and since the thanksgiving holiday put them behind it could be a while before they get back to you.
Thanks. Hopefully will hear back soon from support. Want confirmation that I should be able to get by with just a new keyboard and not need the full input cover.
@Mlaps out of curiosity, did you hear back from support? I had to replace my keyboard and encountered a problem with a keyboard screw stripped from the factory, the upshot of which is that I also need a new input cover set and am without a functioning keyboard in the meantime.
