Now Available for Pre-order in UK, Germany, and France

The Framework Laptop is now available for pre-order in the UK, Germany, and France! We aim to build upgradeable, customizable, repairable products for everyone in the world, and we’re taking the next steps to make that real. We’re using the same pre-order batch system that we launched with in the US and Canada; a fully refundable £100 or €100 deposit is all you need at pre-order time, with the balance collected when your order is ready to ship. Our first batch of orders for the UK, Germany, and France will ship in February, 2022, with later batches opening as each sells out. All orders will ship directly from our new warehousing partner in Taoyuan, Taiwan, just a short truck ride away from our final assembly location to mitigate some of the global logistics meltdown, and all shipments are fully carbon offset.

The product configurations are the same as those we have in the US and Canada: pre-built Framework Laptop options and the Framework Laptop DIY Edition with i5-1135G7, i7-1165G7, and i7-1185G7 CPUs, up to 4TB of storage and 64GB of memory, Windows 10 or the option of no OS, and the full range of Expansion Cards. We have a few tweaks to adapt to each new country of course: keyboards in French, German, UK English, and International English layouts, and UK and EU power adapters. We also learned something important from shipping a large number of Framework Laptop DIY Editions: connecting the antenna cables is a pain. For laptops going to the UK, Germany, and France, we’re instead pre-installing AX210 WiFi 6E cards on the DIY Edition to save your time and sanity. We’ll bring that change to the US and Canada too in the future. You can check all of the available configurations and pricing for both pre-built and DIY Edition Framework Laptops on our website.

One of the first blog posts we wrote was about France’s Reparability Index. Starting from the beginning of this year, every notebook, smartphone, and item in a few other product categories sold in France needs to have a 0-10 rating listed next to its price tag to show how repairable it is by a repair shop or end customer. Many companies have done this begrudgingly, but we’re excited to share that the Framework Laptop comes in at 9.7 out of 10! You may be wondering, why not 10 out of 10? There are a few items like spare parts shipping times that we are grading ourselves conservatively on until we can prove we can meet a higher rating, and we hope to do better in the future.

At this point in this email, you’re probably either excited (if you live in the UK, Germany, or France), ambivalent (if you’re in the US or Canada), or frustrated (everyone else in the world). We chose these three countries based on both the number of people who registered interest through our region selection page and on logistical complexity. The good news is that the infrastructure we’re building (see Scaling up Infrastructure) is what we’ll continue to use for most of the additional regions on our roadmap. Each additional set of countries after these will take progressively less overhead, and we’ll be continuing to launch in more throughout 2022. You can check the keyboards in the Framework Marketplace for a hint at a few of the countries coming next.

We have one more announcement that may be even more exciting for those of you in the US and Canada. Orange Bezels are now in stock in the Framework Marketplace! Grey Bezels are coming in shortly, and we’re working on additional colors too. It may look like a simple plastic part, but the Bezel is actually pretty mechanically complex. The main structure is PC/ABS plastic, the soft edge is overmolded TPEE, and the privacy switches are PC plastic. All three materials need to be color matched to look great. We spent literally months getting the shade of orange perfect while still using >30% post-consumer-recycled plastic, so we hope you enjoy personalizing your Framework Laptop!

I just ordered mine and will now try to cryofreeze my way into February. It’s a bit pricier than I had hoped, but luckily my parents agreed to cover some of the costs as a christmas present. My thoughts and prayers go out to the rest of the EU/world, one day your time will come

UK and EU (Germany and France)! Congraturations!

I live in Prague, Czech Republic. And I noticed the website redirects automatically to the German language in Germany. I have to say I am annoyed by this change.

I suggest that you split the current combined 1 setting into 3 separated independent settings: “Language” (German)", “(Living) Country” (Germany), and “Currency” (Country of banking account and credit card) (EUR). I live in Czech Republic. But I cannot speak Czech. English is comfortable as a language to be used. My native language is Japanese. I appreciate if you consider foreigners in a country. The booking.com is a good example for their “Language” and “Currency” settings. You see those are separated settings.

Whoop Whoop, I can finally pre-order mine :blush:

I’ve noticed a bit of a “Google Translate” translation on the German Configuration page.
“Shipping February” is translated as “Schiffe Februar”. In German “Schiffe” is the plural of “ship”, as in, boats, so this pages sort of says that Batch X is “Boats in February” :laughing:

A better translation would be something like: “Versand im Februar”.

Living in Poland, just next to Germany, makes me extra frustrated. Especially because Polish commonly have multi-currency credit/banking cards, with automatic option to pay in euros.

@devryd @Moffintops i guess this is a mix of potentially having to rework their payment process to integrate paypal etc. and maybe overestimating the use of credit cards in the target audience. I’m sure they’ll add payment options if enough people ask for them.

Well, here we go now in Europe!

But there are also some downers:

  1. The price is quite high (sure the import tax needs to be encountered): it starts at €899 with nothing added at all! Considering that the exchange is $1,13 for €1, that means an extra cost of 35,4% for only the base model. If you than add some storage and so on (with is better priced) you will pass well beyond the €1000 mark.

  2. The payment methods are very limited: no paypal, no google pay, …

  3. The website seems to not be finished either: some translation mistakes (as some have already noticed), the legal pages are only in English, the link for “Vertragsbedingungen” seems to be broken and as far as I can tell (Im not a lawyer), there are also some legal information missing.

I hope you guys will fix some of these issues over the next few weeks and get many new customers!
Im looking forward for a European-repair-your-laptop-future :smiley:

According to my experience with Croatian people, some people would prefer to have EUR than their country’s currency (HRK). And I assume some people have a banking account and the credit card in different country from their living country. So, it’s better to split into 3 settings: “(Living) Country” and “Currency” (Country of the banking account) and “Language”.

that is not exactly correct, they do add the wifi card now plus the labor cost to install it. but nevertheless i agree, i had hoped that inflation etc. would not have to be shouldered by us later buyers

EDIT:
if one adds 19% VAT for Germany, the aforementioned wifi costs and the warranty, 899€ is right around (or even below) the 1$ : 1€ ratio one mostly finds for US products sold here. That of course in turn means that the Framework laptop was pricier than I had thought for US customers, but well, idc, as long as they suffer the same haha

A few notes on pricing:

  1. VAT is included (unlike US/Canada, where taxes are calculated during checkout).
  2. DIY Edition now includes WiFi, while it is separate still for US/Canada.
  3. SN750 SSDs availability is declining, so mostly SN850 storage options are available (or you can bring your own).
  4. We offer a 2 year warranty instead of the 1 year that we have in US/Canada.

I’m a bit confused about the “Staat” (btw this would be more properly translated as “Bundesland”) part of the Address. The state is not part of the address in Germany, having this field seems entirely unnecessary.

Edit: Also… only credit card? Well, that’s immediately preventing or at least significantly delaying my preorder anyways.

it’s probably necessary for their database. but i do remember filling out some “Bundesland” fields in german shops as well.

As a reference, Framework should not model Dell’s website. Dell’s each country’s website and organization (team) are quite vertical by a country. I hope Framework try to pursue the universal experience of users in the globe not like the website of Dell but like the website of ZSA and Netflix.

Here is the actual situation in Dell’s websites I experienced before buying Framework Laptop. Far from the universal experience. Very complicated.

  • https://www.dell.com/en-us : USA, English: only people in US could buy on this website. Dell XPS 13 Developer edition was available.
  • https://www.dell.com/de-de : Germany, German: only people in Germany could buy on this website. Dell XPS 13 Developer edition was not available.
  • http://www.dell.cz/ : Czech Republic, Czech language, the e-shopping was not available. people could not buy on their website. To ask to buy it, I needed to contact another local Dell partner company by email. Dell XPS 13 Developer edition was not available.

I had to double take on the config page as I was looking for the wifi. It may be worth adding a note somewhere on the configuration flow that wifi is indeed included.

Its a little more expensive than I was hoping but i’m happy to put my hand in my pocket to support framework as I share the vision of serviceable items.
