I would definitely buy it too, and I would also be available for testing it :). I am exactly in the same situation as @the-iron-ryan.
a little bad news. a first test batch for the board gives me 2 defective out of 5 PCB ordered. that is a big production issue. still working on why but it is going to be fixed soon
What solution do you use to hold the interposer against the PCB?
the screw stand are not in place yet. but it will be put in the same as the m2 board.
Same here, money is out, likely not going to get a product. I would definitely buy one of these as soon as it is available.
Just to confirm, so this means that the final version will NOT stick out of the laptop at the back, correct? That’s even better then, I am for sure down to buy one.
it is like just a little tiny bit outside of the bay.. but the middle support bracket will be removed for the board to be there..
It is absolutely amazing what you are doing - really looking forward to the board being “operational” at some point. It feels a bit awkward to mention it as I have no idea about the work you are doing, but if there is any possibility to make it just a bit smaller in one of the later iterations, that would be perfect for many users I think.
But otherwise I am sure someone could later on already for the current version 3D print a good cover.
It is going to be good to hear whether it works or not, and whether it needs a re-timer / buffer / interference suppression or not.
I am looking forward to this being an option and I’ll definitely buy one. I sold my desktop as part of downsizing for an international move thinking that I would have a way to use an egpu cleanly with my laptop by now.
I already pre ordered from the first guy but I guess that might not work out.
Nice to see somebody working on it! Are you planning for the final product to include a USB and Displayport (for the internal display) port?
only a dp. but if it is too unstable than I will remove it.
If you are seeing 2 defective out of 5 PCB ordered, you might want to consider adding test points.
These would be test points that the factory can use to test the board before they are shipped to you. It will allow them to detect problems early on and improve their processes before troubling you with it.
I’m pretty sure AMD asked, so it likely didn’t cost Framework much.
I agree, I personally think a lot of people are holding off until Framework proves they can release a GPU upgrade for it. Also, I hear from one of my friends that for that price (they’d be willing to pay more), they want a top of the line GPU.
The silence about FW16 costs them much more.
They should have at least said that they are working on upgrades but they are not ready yet.
Currently it looks like an abandoned project and I cannot suggest anybody to buy a FW16.
I agree that I would prefer some news. I will say that they are very cautious about not promising a GPU upgrade because they depend on AMD for it.
Sure, but still they could say they are working on dual USB-C Modules, OcuLink, new BIOS, new … Whatever. “Nothing ready yet but we are exploring options.”
Currently, bad news are better than no news.
An improved/bigger touchpad would be great.
They are even not working on the firmware bugs and upstream patches.
And that’s what frustrates me most. Not the waiting, the lack of communication.
On Kickstarter they would already get a shitstorm, with good reason.
From a company like Dell that releases every year a new version of the same model, I expect no big communication because I know that there is something new coming.
But from a company like Framework, which supports exactly the upgrade path and sustainability we expect, I expect more. This is no respect for customers.
Yeah, I agree.
My wishful thinking says they’re working with AMD on something and it’s classified information.
It might be the case (as usual to keep making money) but really instead of putting effort on new things they should focus on stabilizing and addressing the current firmware issues. If they’re not able to improve with few products how could they be better with plenty of them ?
Even if they put the best AMD stuff out there, with the current state, the experience would destroy the product like the current model. Despite the huge upgradability, potential and promises around the FW16, look at how many people are selling their model on the forum… It say it all.
