OPAL Drive Unlock with Fingerprint?

Before owning and using a Framework Laptop I used to have a ThinkPad T490s. One of the nicest features of that laptop was that you could use the fingerprint reader as an alternative to the supervisor and HDD passwords, for those drives that supported hardware encryption / OPAL.

So far, I haven’t found a way to bridge this in Framework’s UEFI and I’d like to ask the following:

  • Is there a way to do this that I didn’t find? If so, in my defense it’s not in the guides / documented and I have been patiently walking through all the UEFI pages.
  • Is this allowed / supported by the hardware present in the laptops?
  • Is this in the plans?
  • If not, would it be something worth considering?

It’s a really nice feature that, not only I personally miss (due disclosure!), but I think many OPAL users would enjoy.
