Hi Group,
Could I ask please why the pre-built framework 16 machines are using two memory modules in all three available configurations (two of them being 16GB and one being 32GB) such that none of them are expandable without wasting the modules?
Is the DIY option the only way to get 64GB?
I assume because Framework has done market research and they don’t see much demand for 64GB prebuild versions. Why not get the DIY version?
They do a 32GB version but the 16GB is not upgradable. This doesn’t seem to be a market research thing. Pre-built or DIY… the main issue for me is that as a blind person I don’t relish putting it all together, but I’ll have a go.
Using two modules offers greatly improved performance over a single module.
Framework has mentioned several times that they are trying to keep the number of different products (including different part combinations in pre-built laptops) at a reasonable level for logistics purposes. They likely decided that offering pre-built laptops with 1 ram module wasn’t worth the additional logistics complexity.
Check “page interleave”.
This can speed up memory accesses drastically. Using only one module costs 10% or more.
More than that, when it comes to the iGPU.
That’s why the default configs are all dual channel.

I live alone and don’t get many visitors.
I could coax a relative to come round for half an hour here and there if I got stuck on a specific part of it. I’m still quite covid paranoid and would prefer to do as much of it as I can myself.
I tinkered with desktop PCs back in the day, inserting memory, hard/floppy/CD drives and graphics/sound/network PCI cards but never a motherboard. They used to have a bunch of power connections from the power supply.
One of my fears is ruining a component by touching its electrical pins even whilst wearing a static wrist bracelet.
I’ll likely have a go at it myself and ask here if I need more guidance on orientating myself around the motherboard and witch way round the memory chips or anything else goes.
I believe there have been some threads helping other blind folks navigate around their FW13 motherboards, hopefully some similar ones can be put together for the 16.
If you want, I could assemble it for you and ship it to you if you are willing to pay for shipping, but if you are paranoid or have immune system problems, it would probably be easier to set up a video call and have someone guide you on what to do. Like the relative or whoever you think would do a decent job. I could do it depending on my schedule but I have rotating shifts, so I may be sleeping during the hours you are available when you receive it for up to two weeks. As long as you move slowly and have a top down camera angle, it should work out.

Thank you. That’s an extremely kind offer. I’ll probably have a bash at it myself and shout if I get stuck. The webcam approach could be a really good one.
I’d like to keep your offer on the back-burner if I need it, though I don’t know which country you’re in. I’m in the UK.
Very best wishes.
I’m in Nottingham if that’s anywhere near you I’m happy to help out should you need it. Unfortunately I have to wait until batch 9 for mine.
I’m in Manchester if it helps…
Okay… thank you both. I’m in Burton-on-Trent so not too far from Nottingham.
Very many thanks!
Yeah, US so you should probably go with one of the other guys.
