I’m wondering about the pricing of Framework spare parts for upgrades and what you guys think about the pricing.
First of all, I really like my Framework 13, which is from the 11th generation. Since I love it and don’t want to switch to another laptop or PC, I really want to know what you think. So here it goes:
Watching the latest Gen2 release, I would love to upgrade to an AMD Ryzen 7 or 9 board so I can occasionally play games with friends without needing a dedicated graphics card. However, they are really expensive.
I want to upgrade my laptop rather than buying a new one, and I love that I can order every single part. But what’s the point of upgrading my mainboard for that amount of money? I’m rethinking my decision to buy the Framework and maybe getting a PC to upgrade parts separately.
Yes, I understand that laptop parts are more expensive than PC parts. I don’t think I can or will pay so much for single parts. For example, ordering a new Framework Laptop 13, which includes a new keyboard (I think it has a slightly thicker top) and an AMD Ryzen 9 300 processor, feels more natural than buying that mainboard alone.
I don’t want to produce e-waste, and I like the idea of Framework, which is why we’re all here. However, I can’t help but feel that upgrading single parts of it becomes a premium feature, especially the mainboards but also some other parts.
i looked at bezels… 45€ to 79€ for a plastic bezel + shipping? Seriously?
Framework computers are niche, if they reach mass production like Lenovo or Dell I’m pretty sure there will be plenty of third party dirt cheap replacement parts
Yes i get it, and i´m willing to pay maybe slightly more than i would for mass products. I´m just curious if someone feels the same. It feels like a premium option to buy the current mainboards they released. For that price you get somehow a whole new laptop which has not just a state of the art mainboard, everything else is also fresh like for example the battery.
I wonder about the economic aspect for the enduser.
Lets say you buy the midrange AMD mainboard (819€) + battery (79€) and you need to buy the WiFi adapter too (32€), you are at 930€ without ram. Thats a lot money to just fresh up two parts versus buying a new for that money. for arround 1000€ you get a new notebook with the same mainboard including ram and nvme.
How much of a premium are you willing to pay when replacing individual parts versus the price of a new laptop? That’s the question I’m asking myself. At some point, it no longer makes economic sense, and for me, there comes a time when I have to look at my wallet rather than e-waste. How do you see it?"
