I’ve got an absurdly large monitor (57", 7680x2160 – don’t ask why I thought this was a good idea) and I’m experiencing some problems using it with my Framework 13 (AMD 7640) via a USB-C to Displayport cable. The desktop appears normally and I can set it to native resolution and 120hz without difficulty, but any applications that weren’t already open before connecting fail to open and eventually so do most of the things on the desktop. Oddly, if my browser is open before plugging in it will continue to work fine (even if everything else grinds to a halt). So far I’ve only been able to fix this by restarting, which takes an unusually long time, 5+ minutes.
Normally I would just say “that’s a lot of pixels to ask of a small machine”, but I would expect things to start chugging instead of the odd behavior I’m seeing. More importantly, the problem only applies to a Windows 11 install. Previous installs of Ubuntu and Mint had (surprisingly) no difficulty running the onboard 2880 display plus the 7680 external monitor at 120hz. The temperature doesn’t even rise very much, so I’m assuming the problem isn’t just that I’m overtaxing the machine.
Has anyone experienced anything similar, or does anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions? I’m using the appropriate USB-C slot for the AMD Framework. I haven’t experimented with reducing the resolution or refresh rate, but ideally I’d like to solve the problem without taking either of those steps. It’s not my primary device and I didn’t really expect it would be able to run this monitor in the first place, but I figured I’d see if anyone had ideas.
Thanks!
