TL;DR - wondering whether this Crucial RAM (CT16G56C46S5 - manufacturer link) is compatible & will work reliably with the AMD 7640U running Fedora.
More details:
I am planning to (finally! ) get a Laptop 13 in the next few days - relevants details are:
AMD 7640U chip
Will run Linux, probably Fedora
but as we all know the current RAM + memory crunch has made everything go haywire recently, e.g. Framework’s own branded RAM going out of stock.
I checked out this page about what RAM is supported and I saw that Crucial’s 32GB kit (part number CT2K16G56C46S5) has limited validation but anecdotal reports, here and on Reddit, seem to show that Crucial’s sticks are very reliable.
My question: will just one 16GB stick from Crucial (part number CT16G56C46S5 - manufacturer link) also work reliably? Does anyone have experience with a single stick on an AMD 7640U?
I’m aware the logical response is very likely yes, but since the 16GB stick is not specifically listed (whereas the 16 and 32GB sticks from ADATA are) I would appreciate feedback. I’m struggling to stay within budget but also really need to upgrade my laptop for work, so I want / need to make sure I’m getting the right component.
I use 2 of the 48GB sticks (almost the same) in my FW13 7840U running Arch Linux without any issues at all. I can’t think of any reason why one stick wouldn’t work perfectly fine, you’ll just miss out on the extra speed from using both memory channels.
Any JEDEC standard DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM should work, and just 1 stick should work fine, just with less bandwidth than 2 sticks. It’s not a guarantee or a promise, but really it’s very likely any DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM you can find at common retail/online shops will work. I’d stick to known brand names to reduce the risk a bit.
Do you find that you’re lacking in speed because you’re just running a single memory channel (as mentioned by MathNerd above)? Also considering that if 16GB is enough I could leave it there. Most of the time I’ll use it for work which is majority internet & video calls, but am considering some occasional gaming, too, but that’s very much secondary.
I haven’t tried using a single 16 Gigabyte Crucial 5600 SODIMM but I have used two 16 Gigabyte Crucial 5600 SODIMMs in 4 Framework 13s and one Framwork 16 and they all worked fine with opensSUSE Slowroll Linux. I’ve also used Crucial DDR4 and DDR5 DIMMs in a number of AMD Ryzen desktop systems and had no problems whatsoever. Micron has announced that they will support Crucial RAM and SSDs for their full warranties but they have also announced that they will no longer sell Crucial RAM once existing stocks run out. I have mixed different brands of RAM in desktop PCs without any problems but, if you want two matching Crucial SODIMMs in your Framework 13, you should probably buy the second stick soon before they are all sold if you want to buy a new one, although you probably will be able to buy one used on eBay for years to come.
I have the Crucial 64GB (2x32gb) 5600 with the new ai series ryzen 7 CPU with Fedora 43 and it runs flawlessly!
Not sure if it will be different on the 7640U though. I am thinking it should also run well, as in therory any JEDEC standard DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM should work.
Thanks for everyone’s replies! Seems like Crucial is a good & reliable option.
Yep, I’m aware that Micron is shutting down the Crucial brand. With prices as they are even affording just a single 16GB stick is a stretch right now, though. Let’s see - thanks for the heads-up.
