[RESPONDED] AMD battery empty overnight

Like several other people, the battery of my framework sometimes runs empty overnight, presumably because it does not remain suspended. This doesn’t always happen, so it’s hard to pinpoint, but it did happen the last couple of nights.

I’m on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, so I know I can’t get official support, but it would be great if someone were able to point me in the right direction how to troubleshoot this.

My journalctl contains entries around 20:36 (when I last closed my laptop), 22:25 and 9:10. The next entry after this is me booting the framework at 9:45 at which point the battery was empty.

What may or may not be interesting is that I think 22:25 and 9:10 corresponds to two times when I handled my framework (put it into its sleeve, put it into my bag), without opening it. Is there a chance that this could have woken it from suspend (by e.g. registering as a touchpad press?).

If I recall, that’s a known issue with the forum software. Backslash proc not being allowed.

I’m not sure why you can’t get the hardware sleep numbers. Do you not have a /sys/power/suspend_stats/last_hw_sleep? Can you manually read that?

I’m not sure why that didn’t work. I actually ran your script twice, and the first time it did work:

But when I try to run your script again now, I keep getting:

Unable to gather hardware sleep data with lockdown engaged

cat /sys/power/suspend_stats/last_hw_sleep gives me 0

All the files in /sys/power/suspend_stats/ were last modified just now (when I ran your script again), except last_hw_sleep, which was last modified 13:30 today (the first time I ran your script).

I wonder if your not using systemd is throwing the script off. There have been other different weirdness without systemd reported.

Can you please before bed try a fresh boot and then program the script for longer than you’re going to sleep and report back the specific result from that?

Will do tonight.

I wonder if your not using systemd is throwing the script off. There have been other different weirdness without systemd reported.

Why would you say that I am not using systemd? As far I can tell, OpenSUSE uses systemd, and ps --no-headers -o comm 1 returns systemd. (And also, the very first line from journalctl that I included in my initial post is from systemd.)

The script output above says it’s capturing from dmesg instead of systemd.

I suspect you’re missing the python library that lets you access the journal. Can you look for that? If you find it can you please tell me the package name used by your distro? I should modify the script to try to install it if missing.

I see what you mean now, sorry! I ran your script from a micromamba (=conda) environment, because I prefer to manage my Python environments that way. So I had to pip install systemd-python (it’s not (yet) in conda-forge).

Now I get the following output:

Also, I rebooted this morning, and I’m not now able to reproduce the not entering hardware sleep part from yesterday.

Okay, glad we got to the bottom of that. If you reproduce the issue under the context of the script share the report. In that case need to see whole report not just the summary.

Following.

As Mario indicated, if you are able to repro this please share the report.
