I downloaded and installed steam from the .deb on their website. I’d run into issues before with using steam from a flatpak or similar, but have generally had good luck with .deb on my desktop.
For some reason after the initial launch steam crashes and just lives in the system tray. The only way I can get it to launch properly is with steam in terminal, or by right clicking and hitting Launch using Integrated Graphics Card.
I’ve tried the suggestions listed here but they did not work for me. Is there any way I can either force steam to run on the integrated graphics, or maybe make it not crash on the dedicated GPU?
I appreciate the response, but I did look at this and follow this while I was setting this up. It’s a slightly different issue. The games themselves launch, and I’ve used that launch option to launch them on the dGPU. That all works fine.
The issue however is that the steam client tries to launch on the dGPU as well, which I don’t really care about, except it doesn’t launch and instead crashes. If I click steam in the dock or in the Show Apps menu, it flashes on the screen, and then is only visible in the system tray in the top right corner. None of the options do anything in the system tray except for Exit Steam. That is the issue, is the steam client crashing on launch.
I have found two workarounda though, by right clicking the steam icon and selecting Launch using Integrated Graphics Card, the steam client launches fine, and my games launch on the dGPU still and I’ve verified it with the AppImage in the article that you linked. The other way is through terminal, with the steam command. For some reason that launches just fine as well.
So, where am at now is trying to resolve one or both of the following
Why is the steam client crashing on the dGPU
How can I get steam to launch on integrated GPU by default so I don’t have to right click and select that option every time I want to launch steam, or launch through the terminal
If I start steam with the Dedicated GPU, will this be carried through for all games that are then started? Then it would make sense to start Steam via the dedicated GPU?
Interesting, I don’t see anything in the .desktop file for DRI_PRIME=1. Disabling GPU acceleration for web view in steam seemed to fix it for now though. I’m still curious as to my .desktop file. Unless I’m missing something it’s not there

Second look, yes, they should both be false. That said, I assume the second flag is for KDE desktop and won’t be read by Gnome. I’m on Fedora Gnome, but it’s all the same problem and same Steam bug.
I just tested the PrefersNonDefaultGPU flag both ways, and it still bugs out when set to true.
Don’t forget to log out on the computer (not the Steam account–log out of your user account) and log back in. It only reads the file on login.
@Matt_Hartley it could be a good idea to call out the Launch using Integrated Graphics Card in the text of the guide. Another bullet under search for steam line such as
Right click and select Launch using Integrated Graphics Card
Would help emphasize the importance. Having it just in the screenshot is a little less user friendly, it’s not as easy to notice if you’re using the guides on your phone screen while setting everything up.
