RZ717 Wifi Card cannot be initialized

The RZ717 Wifi card is not initializing. Keeps holding Code 37. I don’t have another way to connect the laptop to the internet to try and find an alternative or more updated driver. Yes I know this is in the 7040 and not AI 300 group, but there is no 16 - AI 300 laptop tag

System Info:

  • OS: Windows 11 Home (22H2)
  • OS Build: 2261.1702
  • Laptop: 16 - AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series (Batch 2)
  • Bios: v 3.04

What I have done:

  1. Installed windows without the wifi driver included in the install media
  2. Did OOBE\BYPASSNRO during the initial windows setup
  3. Ran the driver updater .exe
  4. Ran the Bios updater
  5. Attempt to run the driver updater again
  6. Uninstalled the driver
  7. Ran the driver updater
  8. Manually updated the driver - Driver is on the most up-to date version

Welcome to the community @Joshua_McDonald!

When mentioning that the driver updater was run is this the latest driver bundle from Framework?

The MediaTek WiFi boards do not have native drivers for Windows as you can see. Even the latest version of Windows (25H2) doesn’t have them which is kinda crazy. Not that it should make a difference, it is listed that the OS installed with a (22H2) version. Presumably this is since the later builds made it more challenging to do an offline setup to install the OS.

Getting a copy of the Windows 11 (25H2) media should allow the OS to be updated although it uses a different core and the OS has to be reinstalled. The RZ717 card should be compatible with earlier builds of Windows presumably.

Just thought to throw that out there for your consideration. Contact support and start a case with them in the event the WiFi card is DOA. If feeling adventurous, creating an Ubuntu USB and booting from a Live version would help identify if the hardware is working right and it is just an OS issue with Windows though.

It was the latest drivers from Framework. I even re-downloaded just to confirm.

I could try a fresh windows install with 25H2

Thanks. I thought that the latest driver bundle was being used but thought to check that was the case. There have been others who thought Windows Update would just do everything for them and never installed the driver bundle from Framework.

Maybe 25H2 (24H2 is the same base code too) might make a difference.

Could be worth making an Ubuntu USB just to ensure it is an OS issue not hardware. Let us know how it turns out.
