Samsung 9100 PRO PCIe 5.0 with Framework Desktop

Hello!

Anyone who tried to use the new Samsung 9100 PRO PCIe 5.0 on Framework Desktop?

They are backward compatible, so theoretically there should be no issue, but maybe there is something I miss (e.g. problem with power delivery?).

I am using Samsung 990 PRO on most of my other devices, but since the new PCIe 5.0 memories are now available, I would rather invest in those faster memories to be slightly more future-proof….

As a second thought - the price difference is still significant - so maybe it is a bit overkill… Maybe 990 PRO is more reasonable option…

Thanks in advance for any feedback…

Hi have the 4TB Samsung 9100 Pro in my FW16 Ryzen9 7940HS and happy with the performance and stability. The thermals seem improved over the 990 Pro and better caching. Obviously FW16 Ryzen9 7940HS only supports PCIE 4.0 speed.

Thanks for sharing. It makes sense that the faster 9100 PRO may be more “relaxed” in PCIe 4.0. FW Desktop is also PCIe 4.0, so I still hesitate. I can get 4TB 990 Pro for 289 euros while 9100 will be 409 euro.

Yes, you may not see any big difference really. I had the opportunity to buy it at a pretty good discount “as used” and very good condition from Amazon that is why I grabbed it. Otherwise yes, the price to performance ratio with the 990 Pro you will not see much of a difference in a PCIe 4.0 setup. Best wishes!

You really won’t see ANY performance increase in terms of saturating the bus. Not sure about random access, though. But for 2x more probably better to stick with teh 990. I have one its PLENTY fast.

Agreed. The only reason I got the 4TB 9100 Pro was the incredible deal on a used one that I could not pass up on. Otherwise, my 990 Pro was just fine. Having said that the 9100 Pro is running at PCIe 4.0 speed. I did notice faster load and boot up performance but that could be due to the newer controller but still can’t justify the cost (unless you can find an incredible deal on a used one).

I agree. I don’t really expect better performance, maybe slightly better thermal properties. The most important consideration was to be a bit more future-proof. Sooner than later we will get more boards with PCIe 5.0 controllers and then having matching memory will be handy. In my case the difference between 990 and 9100 (4TB) was 120 euro - so I thought in the end - why not…

That’s the thing, it will only become cheaper going forward as they sell more of them, more competitors come to market and they develop even more advanced technologies.

PCIe 5.0 is overpriced and not very much useful right now, so you will pay a premium without being able to take much advantage of this. Use your existing 990, it’ll be totally, completely enough for everything. And in three years time you’ll be able to get 9100 for much cheaper without ever regretting not having it prior.

I picked a 2TB 9100 Pro up on sale at Micro Center for just $40 more than the 990 Pro, not realizing at the time that the board was only PCIE 4.0. At $40 difference though, I’m not sweating it. As others have said, maybe it’ll be a little faster, and it will be more future proof.
