[Solved] Framework 13 AI 9 300 series DIY - No display output during first installation

Hi - I’m having issues with no display output on my Framework 13 Ryzen AI 9 HX370 DIY edition, right out of the box.

I’ve shared this issue with support already, and I’m hoping that maybe someone has some extra information or steps I could take while I wait for them to get back to me.

The RAM and SSD I supplied are:
Kingston Fury 2x16GB DDR5 5600MT/s (KF556S40IBK2-32)
Samsung SSD 990 Pro 2TB (MZ-V9P2TOBW)

Upon first startup after installing the components, I haven’t had any display output, even after a solid 10 minutes of waiting. Since then, I’ve tried a bunch of troubleshooting steps, namely:

  • I have attempted to re-seat the RAM in every possible permutation I could think of

    • Switching stick position, using only one of the sticks in Slot 0 or Slot 1 with each RAM stick, etc.
  • Attempting to run without any expansion cards except for a USB-C for power delivery

  • Attempting the fixes on this community page: https://community.frame.work/t/solved-framework-13-diy-ryzen-no-display/40964

    • This includes resetting mainboard state, as well as disconnecting internal display and then attempting to connect an external display via both HDMI and USB-C to HDMI
  • Re-seating the display cable

  • Attempting to run without my SSD connected

  • Attempting all above with an installation medium to see if I can get any kind of response from the computer

All of this hasn’t helped at all with this issue.

I get 12 green blink codes followed by the blue/green POST codes.

I have checked for internal damage to the mainboard and my components, but there is nothing obviously visible. All cable pins appear to be in good order, I don’t see any components that would seem obviously damaged. I was quite careful during installation, even wearing an ESD strap, and I don’t think I damaged anything during installation.

The only thing I haven’t tried is doing any kind of BIOS update, since I am not sure if that is possible without any display output. Information seems pretty sparse on this for the Ryzen AI 300 series.

I am not getting any display output at all, external or internal. I’m not getting any keyboard backlight, display backlight, or visual feedback beyond the blink codes. The fans are spinning up, and the power button is lit up after startup. Within minutes after the blink codes, the laptop eventually heats up (not excessively though) and the fans spin up to what I believe is 100%. Based on the blink codes I believe my user-supplied components (RAM/SSD) are in working order, but I don’t have another DDR-5 SO-DIMM laptop where I could test them.

Does anyone know of anything else I could try to sort this issue out on my own?

It is issue with ram. See topic System doesn't boot with new Kingston FURY Impact DDR5 5600 MHz CL40 SO-DIMM 32GB - #3 by oleksiidn

Damn. Okay, I’ll update when I try with a new memory stick.

I suppose I share the sentiment from that post about this information being more easily accessible, particularly in the store page when buying the laptop. There are even comments in the quick start guide which link (mistakenly) to the 7040 compatibility list, which is what confused me initially.

@catastrophic @Eagle can you help other framework user and update links to the compatibility ram list to avoid such issue with AMD AI boards. There are already couple topics related to the issue with RAM like cannot boot, or wake from sleep and changing ram helps. most of the users have issues with Kingston Fury or with RAM with CL40 instead of CL46

Okay yeah I can confirm that it was an issue with the Kingston RAM, hopefully others will be able to use the search better than me

As an aside, I’ve installed a single stick of Patriot Core Series SO-DIMM 32GB DDR5 5600MT/s CL46 (PSC532G5602HS). It was not on the support list, but it was the only compatible looking memory stick that I could get on short notice. In the short amount of time since installation, it’s working without any issues. It might be a good choice for some, given that it’s also among the cheaper memory sticks on the market given recent volatility.

I can run Memtest86+ on it if there would be interest for that.

Glad you got it resolved @Richard_Sedivy. I helped point out to another user just this week on the same issue with again Kingston FURY memory. I know there are lots of vendors out there selling stuff but many of them are solved by ditching the incompatible memory.

Maybe append to the compatability list of memory with known issues?

Enjoy the new machine!
