[SOLVED] Static noises at higher volumes on FW16

Disclaimer This is an issue I (The poster of this article) helped a friend diagnose and am sharing on their behalf in case it helps others. I may not be able to help you with your specific windows issue, and future uses of present-tense should be interpreted as referring to the friend I helped

System info:
OS: Windows 11
Hardware: FW16, no dGPU

Problem (video):

Problem description:
on battery or charging if I’m not playing any audio, increasing my volume makes that static/coil whine noise from the system speaker. if I play any audio at a reasonable volume (>50 or so) then there’s weird coil whine-like distortions which are especially noticeable with voices which sound more robotic now. I’ve been playing audio on my speakers every once in a while perfectly so this issue is sudden after about 6 months of usage. I’m wondering if this is related to an audio issue I had with the 3.5mm expansion card which gave intermittent static with a cheap wired lav mic.

I recently ran DDU for my graphics drivers to get AMD Noise Cancelling, I wonder if that’s connected

Potentially Similar issues (not really that similar):

Testing performed:

  • Tried using aux port to play audio - no issues
  • Tried from a Fedora 41 Live USB environment - speakers work great with and without audio playback
  • Booted into Safe mode - works good

Solution:

I’m wondering if this is related to an audio issue I had with the 3.5mm expansion card which gave intermittent static with a cheap wired lav mic

Ultimately It did end up being related to this. Simple case of user error - I had “listen to this device” selected for my microphone ( so I could listen to what the mic hears) instead of the stereo mix/realtek speakers - i guess i forgot to put it back and it started creating a staticy feedback loop since the mic was near the speaker

This would also explain why the volume didnt jump to being really loud instantly - the video shows theres a delay between high volume and high sound

To get to the menu on Windows 11:

  1. Select a sound output
    imagea

  2. More volume settings

  3. scroll to More sound settings

  4. Recording tab - pick your device, right click, properties

  5. Listen tab - uncheck Listen to this device, Apply

Windows 10 has less steps because microsoft hid the real settings…
