SteamOS Compatibility on FW13/16

Now that Valve has released SteamOS, what is the compatibility of SteamOS on the FW13/16 and maybe even the FW Desktop and Laptop 12?

This is a question you should be asking Valve. They control the hardware they have tailored their distro to run on. Since Steam OS is targetting AMD platforms, if you Framework laptop is AMD based the chances are higher it would work. Still only they (Valve) can say for sure.

I really wouldn’t run SteamOS on a laptop. Yeah it’s probably good for gaming but everything else is pretty jarring, like everyday tasks on desktop.

Something like Bazzite is way more versatile system and gets you the SteamOS goodies but way newer base etc.

I am still waiting for my first Framework hardware to start shipping, but I have tried SteamOS on an AMD HTPC from another brand. I lost some hardware compatibility because SteamOS is still on the 6.11 kernel, and I even experienced AMD GPU crashes that didn’t happen with Bazzite. I wouldn’t recommend it for anything but handhelds at this point.

I was wondering because I’m planning to build a Steam Machine with an FW13 board.

Also, I’m probably gonna use Bazite or maybe Linux Mint

Personally i would still put Bazzite on any “gaming HTPC” as it has pretty much the same bells and whistles that SteamOS has plus a lot more.

Thanks. Will put into consideration.

I adapted the scripts from the SteamOS recovery image and am successfully running SteamOS alongside all my other operating systems currently on my AMD FW16 without any discrete GPU.

So SteamOS 3 is now officially out!? I heard it was coming to other handhelds but wasn’t aware we had access to the OS yet.

I had considered running SteamOS on my FW16 when I first got it, but SteamOS 3 wasn’t available and all old 2.0 links redirected to the Steam Deck recovery (I had apparently deleted the files I had previously used). I also kind of need Windows for some work-related stuff and couldn’t find a way to get it to work on Linux last time.

@inffy Thanks for that information! I might give it a shot to see if I can get what I need working on it. I’m a Windows user by default and have dabbled in Linux a few times over the years (SteamOS being one of them). I primarily use my personal PCs/laptops for gaming and previous Linux gaming was very limited, so Windows was more of a necessity than a choice. I’ve been considering switching over to Linux with the major improvements that have been happening the last few years. I was hoping to use SteamOS since gaming is primary for me and the 2.0 had a desktop mode that I could use for web browsing and more typical PC use.

Just downloaded the SteamOS Recovery Image 3.7.7…installed that on a ThinkPad P14s AMD Gen 5 (OLED, 120Hz, VRR). It then updated to 3.7.8. Played the 2011 version of MW3, no issue.
