Framework as both Work (Ubuntu) and Play (SteamOS?)

So I have a new FW 16 that I was planning to use as my general purpose work computer as well as my gaming computer

  • Work is Programming + Basic Web Apps + Lots of Paperwork
  • Gaming is exclusively Steam games that run on SteamDeck (SteamOS/HoloOS)

Has anyone been able to make this all work?

I’m open to dual-booting or installing extra things on Ubuntu or even switching to something like Arch if required, but I need to understand which process will work. I currently have Steam running on Ubuntu, that was easy, but it limits me to “linux-only” games and I really need “SteamDeck-supported” games.

You just need to set the settings for using proton in steam.

As well, you can force proton on a non-steam game

I did. Just works
Note that when I travel, I remove the dGPU because of the weight.

If you have Linux installed you can install Steam. If you enable Proton for all games as discussed above, you have no need to dual boot. Steam does a real good job of moving all the bits and pieces into places that you need. If it runs on your steamdeck then it will run on your FW as well.

Thank you, this was the exact piece of documentation I was missing. Everything is now working. I am now sunsetting my old Windows PC and moving into the new age!

These topics and answers are fantastic to see! Being able to do daily work and kick off the shoes for gaming at the end of the day on the same machine; huge win. Thank you Framework and thank you community members.

Thanks everyone for helping. I submitted this as a PR to official docs so that first timers can get it right on the first try.
