Support for 5K2K 120hz monitor

Hi everyone, looking for information on 5k2k monitor (120hz) support on Framework 13 AMD (Ryzen 7840HS).

Searching the community threads showed one thread indicating success with an LG 5k monitor running at 70hz which is very encouraging - AMD FW 13 cannot drive external 5k at 70Hz (Fedora 39).

Framework’s documentation has some info on the expansion cards, but they seem specific to the Intel models (rk5GVUwyY) - External monitor support on the Framework Laptop

The specs on 7840hs suggests the display port driving up to 8k at 60hz. Any idea if it can run a 5k2k at 120hz?

Thanks!

Interested in those new flexible monitors??

Theoretically, with DP 2.1 at UHBR13.5, it should have the bandwidth: Edit: I completely overlooked the bandwidth limitation on DP alt mode! Sad trombone noise.

Note that the 780M is an RDNA 3 GPU, and supposedly RNDA 3 supports UHBR13.5.

That’s interesting! Thank you for the response and the links :rightwards_hand:

I’m looking at a Dell monitor and not the latest bendy one from LG. I’m not a gamer, but the OLED screen is very tempting!

The Dell monitor has 8-bit color depth and using the calculator you linked, the bandwidth requirement comes to around 34.25 Gbps, putting it out of range for both Display Port (1.4) and HDMI (2.0b) expansion cards. The USB-C port might still do it, but that needs to be verified.

The 780M specs are promising, so I still have some hope there. Worst case scenario would be run at native resolution, but under 120Hz (72Hz has already been confirmed), which is not ideal, but works for my use cases. Thanks again!
