Swollen battery removed; is it safe to run Framework 13 on AC power with no battery installed?

The 61Wh battery in my Framework 13 AMD Ryzen 7040 series Windows 11 laptop has swollen; I’ve removed it and submitted a support ticket to Framework for a replacement under the extended battery warranty.

Is it safe to run the laptop on AC power with no battery installed?

Also: would I be better off replacing the 61Wh battery with a 55Wh battery?

Are there any third-party batteries that people recommend? (I’m located in Canada.)

Thank you!

Should be completely safe for the computer. The only risk is to your unsaved data, if there’s a power outage.

I can’t speak to the 55Wh vs 61Wh battery issue, I’ll leave that to someone who might know something about it.

So far as I’m aware, there aren’t any official third-party batteries for any Framework system. For unofficial use-at-your-own-risk ones, again, I’ll have to leave that to someone else who might know, but I haven’t seen any mention of such a thing on the forums. (Haven’t looked though, I only have FW16s.)

I ran into the same issue. In my case I found that heavy workloads may pull more power than my charger provides and the system would shut off.

For now im running in battery saver mode with no battery to keep from exceeding available power.

Excellent advice! Thank you!

Did you set the BIOS to standalone mode. I.e. battery missing mode.

If it still would reset, then raise a support ticket via the FW website.

The mainboard should work fine without a battery, and if it does not, it needs fixing.

At least for the 13 the firmware does try to prevent that by setting different power limits and there is relatively aggressive charger prochot.

Using a 100W charger should also help a lot.
