Battery swelling (FL13 / amd 7040 / 61Wh)

FL13 with AMD 7040, purchased in January 2024, has a 61Wh battery that has started to swell, causing the chassis to no longer close properly.

I know some people will ask me to update the UEFI, so let me just say that I have.

The 61Wh battery seems to have many defects. Does anyone know when the 55Wh battery stock will be restocked? I’m planning to buy one.

I’m prioritizing the 55Wh variant. It’s not that the 61Wh variant replacement isn’t an option, but I don’t want to be back here a year later dealing with the same issue.

I’m not here to bash anyone, so I won’t go into details, but I just want to say I’m no longer willing to use support tickets. Don’t ask me to use them. I plan to bypass that and just pay for the parts directly.

The reason I started this thread is simply to let other victims of premature battery swelling know they’re not alone.

can you show the battery health data using

$ upower -i $(upower -e | grep battery)

on terminal?

$ LC_ALL=C upower -i $(upower -e | grep battery)

I’ve added a 60% charging capacity limit as an emergency mitigation measure before replacing the battery.

I think the battery has failed, not due to normal use. 98.5% capacity is like new, swelling is not caused by battery degradation.

40% is even better, the battery’s most “comfort” range for storage is about 30% to 40%

The fact that there are only 31 charge cycles caught my attention, the battery looks brand new on paper and yet it’s swollen. It might be related to overcharging, since I rarely use this laptop unplugged.

Thanks for the tip about battery’s chemical characteristics; I’ll lower the charging limit further to 40%.

You should be able to purchase the battery part on the marketplace, but please note that your battery should be eligible to be replaced under warranty, you can see the details here : 61Wh battery lifetime extender functionality and warranty

The cycles read by upower seem to roll over after 255 so it may be a lot more and the capacity may be wrong if there has not been a full discharge cycle in a while usually it seems to error downwards but it can also be wrong in the other direction.
