Thinking of Suprising My Brother with his own new laptop for his graduation gift?

Hey Yall, its me from the Batch 4 Thread LOL

So i have had my FW16 for nearly 2 Months (Already!) now and so far it has been very smooth sailing (say for a couple very tiny issues that I was able to fix/fixed automatically)

Which gets me thinking, My Brother is graduating high school very soon. His Laptop is all kinds of screwed up but still works (Broken Screen, Dead Pixels). And i want to suprise him with a new one, which is probably also going to be a Framework.

I have been leaning more towards an FW13 with similar specs to mine (Ryzen 9 AI) but im probably gonna start a poll below to see what computer you think i should get (Since they both have Ryzen AI Specs its probably a little redundant)

And one more thing, my brother has been using Windows, so it’s probably gonna just have Windows (Soz to any Linux Peeps)

Its not set in stone, but i have been thinking about it for a while now, so i want your input

Heyy, do you know what your brother mainly uses his current laptop for? Gaming, schoolwork, coding, content creation, etc, etc? That might help narrow down whether the FW13 or 16 would make more sense

@Oney As our Mod stated, if you know what he’s mainly going to use it for, that would be helpful. Do you know if he’s going to college? Trade school? For what? What are his hobbies? Does he use any other devices on the regular?

This community is fantastic and ripe with opinions. The more info (please nothing personally identifying) the better!

Its sort of a jack of all trades type (similar to the reason i got my FW16, Mostly School, Little bit of Gaming on the side). I dont wanna reveal anything other than that because i am not sure outside of that otherwise, and I might end up spoiling the surprise (if it gets further than just this discussion board)

I also did forget to mention that Yes he is likely going to college too.

And im also thinking of Whether or not to get a DIY Kit or just a Pre-Built (Leaning more towards DIY too LOL

To answer the question no, I am not thinking of suprising your brother with his own new laptop for his graduation gift.

I would make a card and order it with him. Part of the fun of a framework is going through and picking all the options. Give him a price cap, and it becomes a fun shared project. You can buy diy and customize it exactly how he wants, and then put it together with him. I may even have a framework box lying around, but an empty box with a note saying “here’s a ~$2000 budget for a laptop like mine” would be pretty great if you ask me.

I voted FW 13, only because it’s a bit more portable. If he will be taking it to college, potentially even taking it to class, a smaller, lighter machine may be a benefit. The Ryzen processors have fairly decent in-built GPUs, so it is capable of some gaming, as long as you keep your expectations in check.

Beyond that, it’s possible the FW 16 would be a better choice, but with the very limited info I have to go on, I’d lean toward the 13" machine.

Either way, congrats to you brother, and good luck to him with his college career moving forward.

Ooh I like that idea. (I threw out my framework box tho when I got my laptop so maybe it will be a card like a I.O.U lol)

This was before I was a Framework employee, so dont judge this too harsh. My other half decided they really wanted a Framework machine. I set up a scavenger hunt around the house. They had to solve riddles to get to the next clue. The last riddle led them to a pre-paid visa gift card with enough money to purchase a good DIY machine. We got to have fun on the journey and then picked the setup together. They purchased accessories for the machine separately ( they wanted lots of expansion cards).

Id probably would not put my brother through riddles to solve lol. But im thinking of creating a little Quiz or Form sheet to figure out what exactly he would want for a framework laptop. (I would probably need to trick him into doing it like creating the form and then having him “test” it out or something)
