Just a topic to collect some ideas and thoughts around the business Framework does.

I will start with: “2nd life program”

Summary

I would suggest an official program, lets call it “2nd life”, were Framework actively reaches out to qualified creators, by sending them hardware, so that they can showcase what you can do with your old hardware.

I want to share my thoughts about reusability of components of the Framework Laptop (FWLT) and want to hear what you think about that.

The selling point and THE unique feature of the FWLT is the possibility of changing components, repairing and upgrading them. Therefor Framework has launched their Marketplace, where costumers can sell their old components and by new ones.

But what do you do with old or “outdated” components? (e.g. a old mainboard)
Maybe no one will buy it, or the possible price is too low.

I think it is now time to start thinking about that.°
Even if not all pre orders are out jet, soon (maybe next year) costumers may want to upgrade.

Some examples°°° for better understanding:

This program would have following benefits:

  1. less waste, due to more reused hardware
  2. reaching a larger audience for the FWLT with relatively low budget
  3. supporting content creators
  4. and receiving therefor a high quality video instruction
  5. giving customers a better “feeling” about their product due to knowing: “I can reuse it as x later on, if I can’t sell it anymore”
  6. less packaging and shipping - the hardware stays were it already is

As I can tell as a follower of the industry, DIY and homemade are topics that have become more popular the last few years. Especially tinkering with Raspberry and Arduino’s has let to more public recognition.

We need to show: Hey, it’s not hard to create something new out of something old, especially with this great product! Here is how you do it.

What do you think? What are your ideas of reusing FWLT components? What creators would you like to see in the program?

As I discovered in this article on the Framework website, there is already one project as I wanted it:
cyberdeck-like keyboard PC
(great video and great idea :+1:)

Like I mentioned above, we need more of these projects to give the hardware a meaningful value after its life as an laptop.
So Im in hope of new videos soon.
