[TRACKING] Fedora 43 slow to boot (update: because of System Firmware 3.04)

I installed a fresh copy of Fedora 43 on the Framework Desktop and it takes over 2 minutes to boot to Gnome. This is a default install (with BTRFS, encrypted drive).

It seems like a large portion of the time is spent on the loader.

systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 10.143s (firmware) + 1min 11.233s (loader) + 2.485s (kernel) + 16.127s (initrd) + 20.066s (userspace) = 2min 56ms
graphical.target reached after 20.066s in userspace.

Has anyone seen this?

I spent a bit of time debugging this and didn’t get far. I swapped an older NVME that has Fedora 42 on it and the loader took only 20s.

Nevermind, it is because of the System Firmware 3.04 BIOS update. Once I downgraded to 3.03, the loader is done in under 5s.

I’m affected too. Correlating with the BIOS update getting delivered to my Desktop via LVFS, my existing Fedora KDE 43 setup installed on my 4TB SN850X suddenly started taking 2 minutes or more on every boot. I also ran the command and found that my loader times were the abnormality. Reinstalling with the default partition scheme exhibited the same issue (I normally use f2fs). I looked online and found no other reports at the time, so I thought either my Desktop or my SSD was broken (my testing over the past couple days reinforced this, as other external and internal drives seem to boot right away). I’m so happy to hear the problem isn’t just with my hardware, I was dreading returning my SSD to Best Buy. I’ll downgrade my BIOS, get set up on my SN850X, and report back here.

Edit: Issue is gone after downgrade. Disabled LVFS in Discover (I’m running Fedora KDE) to avoid automatic BIOS updates for the time being.

@Alan_Ning @Jack_Woodhead there is already a thread discussing about this issue.

Appreciate you reporting this. If you can report this to the SoftwareFirmwareTracker on GH, this would be immensely helpful - linking to this thread and your experiences.

Please file the bug under Issues, include this thread and repro steps taken to get back to a good state with the downgrade please.

I came here for this…. yes: Kubuntu and Fedora hand for 60 seconds at initrd after upgrading BIOS to 3.04. Extremely irritating.

Created a ticket since i’m experiencing the same issue

GitHub #138 — FW Desktop 3.04 Slow Linux Boot

  • BIOS 3.04 on Desktop Ryzen AI MAX 300 causes ~60s hang at initrd, GRUB timer runs at 1/10 speed
  • Distro-independent (Fedora, openSUSE, Bazzite all hit it)
  • May be SSD-related — one user saw it only with WD SN850X 4TB
  • At least one Windows user reported the same symptom, suggesting it’s firmware-level, not Linux-specific
  • The firmware update is in the works.
