Ultra 5 125H vs Ryzen 7640U for gaming performance and battery life on Windows?

Hi,

I’m looking at buying a 2nd Framework 13 to give to my daughter for college. I think the Ultra 5 125H or Ryzen 7640U would be more than adequate for the basic productivity stuff she’ll use it for. I have the 7640U and I’m very happy with it.

How do these two laptops compare in terms of gaming performance and battery life on Windows 11?

Thanks very much!

From a pure benchmark view, the two processors are on par with each other.

Anecdotally…

I have the 7640U in my FW13 and it’s been fantastic, best laptop I’ve ever owned. I’ll get a solid day of battery life for basic productivity stuff, and the fan will almost never spin up. In terms of gaming I wouldn’t recommend it. The integrated GPU isn’t going to be up to the task for modern games. I’ll caveat that I’m a Bluefin Linux user so I can’t speak to how it would run Windows.

I also happen to have a Lenovo laptop with a Core Ultra 155U for work and it is probably the worst laptop I’ve ever owned. It runs super hot, struggles to get more than ~4 hours of battery life, takes forever to resume from sleep and tends to drop Thunderbolt connections randomly. It also just feels slower to me, not really sure how to quantify this but I imagine it’s something to do with Intel’s P/E core scheme and Windows process scheduling. I can’t imagine the 125H being any better.

Neither is a great choice for gaming though. The integrated GPUs in the newer generation are much better. So if gaming is important then you should consider the Ryzen AI series, or maybe a FW16 with discrete graphics.
