Upgrade from AMD 7040 mainboard to AI mainboard?

I’ve got a 2023 Framework 13 with the AMD Ryzen 7840u mainboard. I’d like to upgrade to the new Ryzen AI 300 series mainboard. It looks like the RAM & SSD are compatible, but when I check the config, it looks like the AI 9 370 board requires the 2.8k display - I have the 2.2k display from 2023. Can I put the AI 9 370 board in my existing 7840u-board chassis? Do I need to upgrade the screen as well? Are there other things I need to consider when doing this upgrade? Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can offer!

Where did you see that the 2.8k display was required? I was only aware that buying a fresh AI complete laptop would come with the 2.8k display (alongside coming with the 61w Battery). I’d also assume that by now, if it ‘was’ imposed, the BIOS/UEFI would have been updated to deal with the older screen.

There is no requirement for the 2.8k display. You will want to follow the general upgrade instructions. For example, when using Windows you’ll either want to disable bitlocker (if enabled) and also have a copy of your bitlocker key before moving the SSD to the new board. But after that it’s just a matter of install the board and parts. Also, if possible try to just remove the wifi card from the board and not take off the antennas as they are fragile.

Thanks! I guess that’s what I meant - when you’re configuring a new device and pick the AI 9 370 as the board, you the 2.2k display is greyed out - you can only pick the 2.8k display. I thought that was probably a configuration limitation rather than a hard requirement, but wanted to double-check before plonking down $999 on something that wouldn’t work.

Perfect! Thanks for confirming that  When you say the general upgrade instructions, do you mean this mainboard replacement guide?

I’ve done that before for an RMA when the board died shortly after I got it, but am just trying to make sure I’m not making some bad assumptions before I spend the $$$. Thanks again!
