Hello everyone, last weekend I finally managed to upgrade from Intel to AMD since I’m getting more into video editing.
The laptop worked almost seamlessly, aside from removing TLP in favour of power-profiles-deamon and the removal of the kernel option nvme.noacpi=1 as it was freezing the laptop on suspend
Anything you think I should consider or I forgot???
I don’t know about swapping hardware in Linux, but if you had posted before you swapped, I would’ve recommended you just purchase an eGPU enclosure.
Correct me if I’m wrong (I don’t have much experience in video editing).
The CPU should be more than enough to handle some video editing (even 11th gen), but the GPU is what bottlenecks video editing the most. Even though the 780M in the new AMD boards is quite capable, it pales in comparison to dedicated GPU’s. With Intel, you also get the benefit of Thunderbolt 4 (I believe), which allows for even faster eGPUs.
A budget GPU and eGPU dock may have been a bit more expensive than a new mainboard, but it would likely let you process video a lot faster.
aha! good to know, and also something I haven’t considered. That’s something I am likely going to look into if things don’t work out as expected.
Thanks a lot for pitching in. Also, to be totally honest, I am quite happy with the swap so far.
Actually on the amd platform you get usb4 which allows for even more (actually usable) bandwidth to an egpu (asuming that’s also usb4, usb4 in tb3 mode is just as slow as tb3). Egpu support imo amd is a bit better in that comparison but for a video editing use case both should work just fine.
Propper certified thunderbolt does have other advantages, mostly just being a bit more polished.
